I need new brake pads and I'm looking at the Axxis Metal Master pads. So far I've come to the conclusion that they perform incredibly well when warmed up and have a good bite to them. So far the only complaint has been Dust, which isn't that big of deal.

However, I'm curious as to how they act in the winter. I just finished college so I couldn't afford to pick up a winter vehicle... this means that this will be the first winter that I will have to put my baby through snow. Can anyone tell me how these act under cold weather? I just don't want them locking up on me if it's slick out.

Thanks!

So you don't have ABS, then?

I have those pads on my car, and they feel underpowered the first time I use them each day. After that they feel stronger than stock. I've never driven in cold weather like what you get in Iowa, but I imagine the would cool off quite a bit in between stops. I wonder if they might feel inconsistant if you did a high speed stop and they warmed up halfway through the stop? That might be tricky to control. Just a thought.

yeah those pads kind of suck in the morning..and u have to make a few stops..i would thinking about geting more of street pad for daily driving in cold weather...like carbon friction..or something like that.....also the metal master seem to wear out fast and eat up ur rotor..but not all ppl drive like me...

no i dont have ABS... should i stay away from these?

i really want some good brakes at a decent price, because labor is going to be expensive (getting tokico illuminas installed at the same time).

i loved my metal masters, i ate them up real fast tho, but they stopped my car incredibly well, far better then stock, you dont have to press as hard so they bite alot better, and they only fade if your stopping from above 120-130

mine did make tons of dust, but it was a really easy kind of dust to get off, it wiped right off

Brakes are so damn simple to do that an inbred monkey could put them on. It's take off the wheel, take out one bolt, take out the old pads, put new pads in, put bolt back in, torque wheel down.

Labor should be nothing.

unless you pull out of your driveway and gun it to 100 then start braking, the cold braking doesnt really matter...use them for like 30 seconds and they are heated up, i never had any issue with metal masters in any part of the year

I have those pads on my N/T, and they do take a few stops to warm up. Even in winter, maybe 4 or 5 stops to warm them up good, but i found that just tapping the brakes when driving 55-60 on my local highway that they warm right up. It's definately worth it though, they are great pads, and I've had them on that car for 7 months and i do some retarded crap in it, and theyre still going strong.

When you say that they take a few stops to warm up, what exactly does this mean? What do 'cool/cold' brakes do? I mean, as long as they don't just lock up when I hit them or not grab at all... then I'm good.

I mean, I am not going to start my car up at 30 degrees and expect to do an autoX right away... I just don't want to fly into the back of someone at a light or lock them up on a slick road.

They don't lock up, but you have to give the pedal a decent amount of pressure and hold it pretty good to get the car stopped and keep it that way. It's kind-of hard to explain the feeling. They are hard to get to lock up IMHO, I have no ABS on my car and those pads give me much better braking response.

broox u know the feeling u get when ur try to stop from high speeds and ur brakes fade...well that is the same feeling u get with those pads in cold mornings..and u will slam into someone if its ur first hard stop of the day....its like ur slideing..good luick

I had Metal Masters on my car for 2 years, and they were just fine in the cold (Illinois winters). They did not take any longer to warm up than when it was warmer outside.

They are better than the stock pads, but not the best pads you can get. I don't know if you're looking for something with even more bite, but there are other options that are not too much more expensive (Porterfield R4S, Hawk's, etc.).

Also, if you're thinking about changing them yourself (to add to what cait said), you should also get the rotors turned.
