Well, my car needs some new struts in the front pretty badly. I was wondering if there is a good but fairly inexpensive set of struts out there that I should get... or should I just take it to my mechanic and have him throw some on?

Thanks a lot.

Tokico Illuminas are 137 a shock most places you look I think. Look at this site's Sponsors page for sites.

there is a huge difference..
also, kyb agx's and i think all tokicos are gas shocks, while koni's are hydraulic. gas shocks are not know for their superior reliability and performance. i have neuspeed modified koni's and i love em. you can find em for about $525 and are MUCH better than tokicos or agx's.

525 = all 4...shocks are generally between 70-200 each depending on quality.

Koni Yellows are the premium: i think around 170 a shock. Illuminas seem to be the best bang for the buck: 137. KYB AGX's are cheaper but still quality: under 100.

If you plan on lowering your car, go with koni's or illuminas as AGX's on a 2g are not recommended. Otherwise, I'd say go with KYB AGX's.

The aforementioned shocks all are able to adjust damping (how hard or stiff the ride is) Adjustable is great for soft in town everyday, stiff going around corners at 80mph.

If you dont need/want adjustable shocks, look at Tokico Premium Performance, AKA Tokico Blues. Look at KYB GR-2's. I think GR-2's come on our cars stock.

Good Luck. I hope this helped,
Jake

I was about to buy some Illuminas when i saw that ebay had a buttload of HPs for half the price. Are the HPs not adjustable or something? Do they suck?

No they dont suck, but they aren't adjustable. Tons of people with budget in mind opt for the HP's. Better than stock performance but not top of the line.

Jake

Stupid budgets. I just ordered a set of illuminas.

If anyone else wants them, there is a guy on ebay that has a set of 4 for sale for $365 (buy it now). He has 5 more sets.

Are they new? Because that's a hell of a deal. Are they for 2g FWD dsms only?

Jake

I have a 97 GSX and I was wondering if anyone had Tokico Illumina shocks and stock springs, and how they are together. I want to get shocks before I get springs. Would I be better off with KYB AGX shocks than the Tokico Illumina? I reallly want them to be adjustable, I was also looking at Koni shocks, but I read you have to take them off in the back to adjust them rather than just jacking the car up. If I go with the Tokico and stock springs for now how much will it lower my car? I don't want it lowered too much, but I am looking for an inch or so. I also heard that Konis you have to take off in the back to adjust? I don't want to do that. Since the KYB AGX isn't recomended would I be best with the Tokico?

You're thinking the exact same way I am. Konis are too expensive and AGX's cant be lowered. Tokicos have proven to be perfect for any situation, stock springs, lowering springs, coilovers, whatever. Plus, I dont think you even need to jack the car up with the Tokicos to adjust them. All you need is a screwdriver. Go get some from the link provided earlier in the thread. 365 a set is the best price I have ever seen. I'll be getting some before long.

Jake

Yeah Tokico does look like my best bet. I have a set of dropzone coilovers that I don't have the adj things for (Never got them from the guy I baught the bar from) and also I have dropzone shocks. I was not impressed with either of them at all. My car was slammed way down, looked pretty good, but wasn't practical at all! I had them taken off and replaced with the stock suspension. Now all I really need is some shocks for now. Coilover can wait. Thanx for your help!
