This is my first post here, so I hope I do this right.

Has anyone mounted monster tires on there 2g. Got any pics. I’m talking 245’s, 255’s even 265’s. I know it’s been done a few times and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. I was under the impression that the +25 offset of the cobra rims works, but the few instances I’ve seen it looks terrible.

Thanks.

245's on 8 inch/8.5 inch wide rims work fine. Anything more and you're going to be sticking out of the wheel wells.

17x8 with a 245/40r17 and a 40-35mm offset will clear with minimal tire sticking out of the fender. A 255 needs an 8.5" rim, and any rim over 8" will stick out of the fender significantly.

Here's what I used to have:
18x8.5" +35mm offset rims with 245/35/18 Dunlop SP8000s (every tire design varies a bit in its true dimensions). Suspension is Tokico Illuminas with Ground Control Coilovers, lowered quite a bit, and camber kits all around.

In the front these stuck out just a bit. Tire sidewalls bent a bit inward as the tread was not really wide enough for a the 8.5" wide wheel, but there were never any problems (i.e. just a visual erk). In the rear they did no stick out past the fenders, but I did have a bit of camber so with stock settings they might. In the front I didn't ever hit the fenders on full compression as I would hit the bump stops in the suspension first. In the rear I had to have the fender lips rolled to allow full compression, otherwise the tires would hit the lips and thus not be able to tuck under the fender. I never had a problem passing inspection with this setup.

I now have 255/35/18 Kumho Ecsta Supra 712s on the same car. The front now much more noticeably sticks out from the fenders, but still not enough for most people to confuse you with a hispanic special :) I would love to spend money to have the fenders extended/flared to cover them, but that would take away from the performance budget, hehe. No problems again with hitting the fenders since the bump stops hit first. In the rear, at the same height I was using with the 245 tires, the tires easily hit the fender lips if they aren't rolled. Medium-sized bumps were doing it. I rolled the fenders (if you're confused as to how I had them rolled with the 245s but had to do it again for the 255s, it's another story :) ) this past weekend, and this of course couldn't solve the problem as now on heavy compression I still hit the fender lip with the edge of the tire. Rolling the fender did help quite a bit though as it gave me a bit more suspension travel seeing as it takes extremely heavy bumps to cause them to rub. My temp solution is to raise the suspension a 1/4" on the rear. Once that was done it takes me hitting a speed bump or massive pothole to make them rub. Of course this means I'm stuck with some custom body work to get them to tuck under, but I believe the curvy lip of the fender can be worked without having to extend the fender outwars and still accomodate the tires.

Hope that helps :)

Well, I am very happy with look and fit of my 235s on 18 x 8.5 rims with 40mm offset. They are flush with the fender openings. Exactly what I wanted. I passed a Mustang Cobra on the highway yesterday and man, he had some seriously wide tires. Anyone know what size they use?

By the way GSXMitri, it has been theorized that 245s are the widest possible tire you can use on a dsm without major problems or modification. Obviously some of these guys do not allow themselves to be limited by these petty laws of physics.:thumb:

(I still want to see them though)

Well, you are right in that I'm going to have to do something more drastic to the rear to get them to fit under full compression, hehe. Bending up the lip wasn't enough :( However, there's still a bit of an edge to the fender, but it's rather curved and thus would require professional body work to flatten out. I'm convinced that if that's flattened a bit I'll be fine.

Or I could save myself the hassle and try some 245/40/18s :D What fun would that be though?

245/45-16's fit fine on my 2g. They're on 16x7.5" rims and there's enough room to go 255 or maybe 265 (but 245 is the most I would put on a 7.5" rim)

What offset wheel to you have? I currently have 225/50r16 tires on 16x7.5 wheels with a 42mm offset and I am ALMOST rubbing on the control arms in the rear. I think there is only about 1/8" - 3/16" of space between there.

My brother '99 Roush Stage 2 Mustang has 295/45/19 on rear and 265/45/18 on the front:thumb:

I've been thinking about this alot. I just think a dsm would look so good with some nice big 275/40/17's on it. Here is the link to a page written by DG. http://www.wincom.net/trog/autocross/2G_ESP.html here they have a discusion about it. It looks like 17x9.5 Volk TE 37's w/ 12mm offset will work, but there 475$ a rim, so I've been looking into some other options. It looks like the 25mm offset on the cobra rims would need a spacer for them. I know they make 16" knock offs with some better offsets, but I'm worried about wheel bearings getting messed up buy running this setup. Anybody have any imput?

Well, the wheel bearings as I understand it are a primary concern. Also, you'd either need super fenders, or deal with limited suspension travel in the rear. Lastly, if this isn't for a pure race car, I'm not sure you'd pass safety inspection. Might want to check on that with your local inspection station.
