1G Wheel Clearance?

If someone wrote up an article on this it would be nice (I'd archive it).

What is a safe offset for the following wheel sizes for a 1G:

18x8
18x7.5
17x8
17x7

How far off of 46mm can you get without problems, assuming a 225 tire size being the widest.

Maybe if everyone chimes in, you can consolidate all the data. I am currently running a 1G AWD with 17X8, 42 mm offset--no rubbing. Running 14.75" ride height in front, 14.5" in rear with coilovers. I am running 215 tires but will be going to 245/40 at next replacement.

are those numbers close to the same for a 1g, i was thinkin about getting 18's but not many people use 18's on 1g's so i didnt know if id have rubbing issues

I can't be certain, but they seem to be the same. The wheel fitment is about equal.

Im running, 18x7.5 with 42mm offset and 2" drop, no rubbing at all. running 225/40r18

I don't think 1G fitment and 2G fitment is the same. I've heard people having trouble getting the same wheels to fit on a 1G that had no rubbing problems on a 2G. The chassis is much different, as are the body panels. There will likely be instances where one wheel will rub on a 1G and won't on a 2G. for that reason.

For example - a buddy of mine has 19's on his 2G, which would not fit on my 1G. It's a different set of clearances.

You are correct, 1G/2G are different. The 2G's use the double-wishbone suspension while us 1G guys use a front strut setup.

The MachV site doesn't give much good info other than tires. Mike at DSS has run 245/40 on 8" wide, 17" wheels with 40 mm offset. No major rubbing, just a little on the inside plastic shield with the wheel at full-lock.

Depending on trailing arm clearance 1Gs typically have 5.75" of backspacing (for 16" wheels this clearance may be a little too tight and require slight grinding of the flange on the arm). Going over 2.37" front spacing and the front tires will stick out of the front fenders significantly.

Using that for 7" wheels your offset range is 30mm to 57mm. I'd stick around 40mm-45mm if possible.
For 7.5" wheels you have a range of 35mm to 50mm.
For 8" wheels that gives you a range of 40mm to 45mm. If you want to run 245s stay down near 40mm.

I personally run 17x8" enkei RPO1s with 245/40r17 Kumho MX tires. I actually haven't got a chance to drive on them yet though as I'm rebuilding my tranny.
