Need help choosing Tire Size.

I'm getting ready to order some Kumho Ecsta Supras but I need to know what size tire to get. Factory is 205/55/16 with an H rating. The tire I want is going to be a little wider and lower profile. What size would I need? I always thought 205 was width, 55 was profile, and 16 was size but the tire guy said I was only partially right. Also rating does not matter, as long as they're H. I don't drive fast on public roads. Sorry this is so long. But I wanna clear this up before I order.

let me know, cuz i received four new kumho ecsta supra from a friend and not sure if it fits my stock rims. i once took it to a repair shop and the guy told me it's too wide..

The middle number is aspect ratio. Its a percetange of the section width (the first number)

So 45% of 205mm is how tall the sidewall will be

Use the calculator jpolizo gave the link to and plug in a few numbers, dont stray to far from the correct overall height though.

BTW> 225 50 is a common step up from the 205 55... not much shorter or lower proflie but much wider.

Guy was a jackass. I have had people tell me you can't fit 235's. Thats funny since I'm riding on 235/45/17's.

To keep the speedo right with 16's 50 series.
17's 45 series
18's 40 series
19's 35 series( yes 19's fit )
However the bigger the rim the more power it takes to turn them.

For the original guy 225/50/16 is a nice setup on stock rims. Thats what I used to have on the stock OZ racing rims. ( stock for a 99 )

This is half true, read above about width and aspect ratio. You cant just say any 45 series tire on a 17 wont affect the speedo. Its 45% of the width.

I think what he's trying to show is the plus sizing system
+10 -10 +1, so here it is... 205 55 16
in a 17 215 45 17

this is a way to keep the tire height as close as possible without actually mounting a tire on a wheel, inflating and measuring, because there are minor differences by maufacturer but this will get you pretty damn close, hope it helps.
