I am going to install a front mount on my 1g and I need to relocate both my Auto trans cooler, and power steering lines (as they get int the way and go through the holes I need to feed my IC pipes through) My friend that is helping is says I should just delete my PS, save some room and power, and call it a day. I on the other hand wanted to get a small cheap oil cooler and reroute the lines to the cooler out of the way. I read 1g are not that bad w/o PS and he says you get used to it really fast, and I could use a work out.

I feel like having AWD will cause you to go through a massive workout every time you drive. I thought about doing the delete, but remembered the AWD aspect, and I'm just going to keep it.

You can pull the pump and belt to try it out. Loop the lines at the reservoir that way its easily reversible if you dont like it and it still keeps fluid in the rack.

I didn't mind it at all.

If your referring to torque steer, i experienced none. From the equal length half shafts i suppose? The only thing to get used to is the car will follow the road, it just feels different then a p/s car. It feels like your stuck to the road, which is a good thing imo haha, had a much better feel.

i havent driven mine yet, but i did a "depowered rack" per the miata mod for mine. most of my vehicles came with no ps. my toyota pickup is manual steering, 4x4, runs 33s and is easy to steer in my book. im not the hulk but i never minded slightly harder steering and better road feel. plus every ps equipped vehicle ive owned always have some sort of issue with the system, be it a leaky rack, leaky or whining pump, or it just flat out didnt work. i always got tired of replacing stuff and have the same or more problems.

theres alot of 1.8 racks in the yards out here, ive thought about grabbing a couple of them to refurbish and sell, but didnt feel like doing the work.

id say delete it, per the miata mod, or manual rack and enjoy the slightly buffer arms. might even get a passenger of the female variety to ride with you then, ha. kidding.

I don't see any reason to delete it just to install a front mount intercooler, you can bent the cooler a bit and tuck it between the radiator and intercooler, or just loop the cooler lines together. The power steering doesn't take up a lot of room, it is easy to work around, and doesn't take much power at all. For what it's worth, the benefits of having power steering far outweigh the benefits of not having power steering.

The yard by me typically dont have DSM's, its pretty rare to find one, even 1.8L. My friend told me I dont even need to swap the rack, he did his w/o it and just deleted the pump.

If you daily drive it, keep your power steering....weekend warrior car then try it with out the power steering....like was above, just remove the belt and try driving the car without the power steering and see for your self first.

Don't delete it, is a pain in the $$$ to make U turns or going in tight parking lots, If it is a DD, I wouldn't suggest, Just reroute the lines and you will be OK, you can even change the cooler to the front of the driver side tire, It will get the air from your bumper opening.

I would also keep it unless its a race car, or you are just very serious about road feedback. I have it in my daily, and am removing it in the race car, and thats what makes the most sense to me.

Eh I would delete it

Personal Experience in 1g/2g/Evo/3000gt

Its not that bad really.... the only time is when parking in small areas, but even then its not hard

People that cry about how "tough" it is to turn are most likely the same people that cry about prothane motor mounts :idontknow:

When I bought my 1g it didnt have power steering. I hated it.. I bought everything I needed to put it back in. Ive driven both my 1g and 2g without it and I dont care how much horsepower I end up making I will always keep it..

On a different note just delete the ps "cooler" and loop the lines.. That way you still have power steering and have room for the fmic and other things you need! Unless you are doing some serious autox the pump wont get hot enough for it to make a difference.

From first hand experience, running the car with a power steering rack and no pump/lines SUCKS. I was told it'll be fine, blah blah blah... Wrong. I swapped it the right way, with a manual rack, and it's a day/night difference. I love the manual rack. It is significantly easier to steer vs the power rack with no pump and the driver feedback is excellent (it was god awful terrible with the power rack with no pump). I have zero issues with slow driving or parking in tight spaces and my car has front and rear LSD's. If you're gonna do it, do it right or don't do it at all. Plus, as Brian stated, there is no reason to delete it just because of a FMIC install. Just move the cooler line or delete it.

i agree that if one was going to delete their power steering, to do it the proper way with either a manual rack from a 1.8 OR depowering a PS rack. looping the lines and or just disconnecting the pump is significantly harder to turn than a true manual rack.

there is still a hydraulic effect of trying to move the fluid back and forth between the two sides of a rack with lines looped or just pump removed.

some ppl like PS, i personally never could find a good enough reason to keep it, unless it was a brand new vehicle (like my gfs toyota highlander).

I replaced the "cooler" lines with a small cooler unit. Its maybe 8" long that has a tube running threw it with fins. I mounted if off to the side. This was when I was doing a lot of back roads driving and figure cooling maybe a good idea. I then went to a manual rack as I was aiming for a more simple engine bay. I don't mind it, but when I get into my other 1g with PS, I do miss it.

i was just going to get a small cooler for it and set it of on the driver side airduct. I was looking for opionions, I dont think I will have the time to do a manual rack swap. It was just an Idea my friend told me cause he deleted his and told me I should on mine to. Im probobly going to get a small cooler for it.

My buddy designs powersteering pumps. His info was... the only need for a ps cooler is if you are going to park next to a curb then steer your wheels into the curb for extended periods of time, essentially forcing fluid to the bypass valve. I installed a ~8" loop in place of the cooler line.
