I am not to sure if this is in the right forum for this question, so please move if need be.

I have had a loud grinding noise that sounded as if it was coming from the trans. Well, I changed transmissons and rebuit my motor. I took it out for a test drive last night and the motor and trans performed great! BUT!!! The same loud grinding noise is still there when I am on the gas. When I let of or go into neutral the noise is still there just not as loud until I put a load on the wheels. I am thinking its my passenger wheel bearing goin out. Well I took another drive today and same thing except now I lost my speedometer, its at 0 while I am driving and the car felt like it was wobbling a bit. I was like WTF!!!!!!!!!! So i get back to the house and I pull the speedo and check the plastic gear and it's fine. The plug is fine and there are no broken wires. Is it possible the wheel bearing to cause the speedometer not to register? Also, if the bearing is bad, and I believe it is, could it hurt my transmission at all? I need help quick!!! I picked up 2 new wheel bearings and am about to change the fronts, but I want to know if there is anything else that may need looking at and possible repair, what else to look for? Thanks ahead of time for the help. :thumb: I will be back soon.

Yes I got two new wheel hub bearing for the front. I have done the change before about 2 yrs ago. The speedo looks to be fine! Spins, no broken teeth and it worked just fine when I drove and then I came to a stop, started to drive and the no speedo and I started to hear clunking noise and the front passenger wheel started to wabble a bit. I am abot to go check that wheel now. Well, the actual Mitsubishi service manual says that a speedo failure could be caused by a few different things including a bad wheel bearing, I have already checked all the other possible ones and its good.

Well I grabbed the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock and moved it in and out. The passenger side has quite a bit of play and the drivers side a tiny tiny bit. I am going to pull the passenger side apart now. But I still need to know a few things still about if it could have hurt my tranny? Its been just rebuilt not long ago so I now its good. Thanks!

If the noise gets louder when you turn left, but stays pretty calm turning right, then you most likely have a passenger side wheel bearing problem.

It does, I knew about that and checked for that today too. I have the hub bearings, I am just more concerned about the tranny, ya know. We'll see. I am tearing into the wheel assembly now.

Well I have had the passenger side wheel hub bearing out for 20 minutes now. Come out pretty easy! LUCKY ME!!! You can tell definitly that it is bad. I am about to install the new wheel hub bearing now. Next I will be taking of the drivers side.
