Well normally I could just take the rear caliper off & answer my question but the car is in storage & I wanted all the parts required to swap on the new parts in the spring, without alot of downtime so here's my question. How many shims are used on the rear brake pads on a 2g per caliper side? Any brakes I have done normally have a shim on both pads per side. I was looking at the Hawk HPS pads I got for the rear & noticed that there are only shims on 2 out of 4 pads. So do our rear pads only have one pad with a shim per caliper or are my pads a screw up or do you have to purchase shims off Mitsu for the other pad etc?

Pads usually have a shim on the back, think its mainly just to prevent them from squeeling as the shim is usually a different/softer material then the backing plate on the pad. On every car I've changed pads on, there has always beeen shims already installed or shims included with the pads for you to install on all 4 pads. This is why it seemed strange to me when the shims were only installed on 2 pads. Normally they are basically just a drop in affair. Anyone changed the pads recently on the rear?

Daren, I installed my rear HPS pads today and took some pics of the new pads and the old pads for you... It looks like the old pads only had the shim on one pad (per side) also...

I now the sides are reversed (one drivers side pad and one pass side pad) on this one, but I had already loaded up the caliper when I remembered this thread and grabed the camara:

Hey thanks for the reply, looks like my pads are fine. I never would have thought they only came with 2 out of 4 shims as I've never seen that on any of the brake jobs I've done.
