Princeton,
Hi, I definately want to convert my 93 Talon to a manual steering rack, but I have a few questions that nobody can seem to answer.

What are the steering ratios on the power rack?
What are the steering ratios on the manual rack?

I know they are different, from what I heard the manual is worse.

Is there a different ratio available on the manual rack?
Is there a manual rack from a different application that would work and have a better ratio?

Thanks in advance for any info!

I am very interested in this question as well. I would love to convert my car as well. I dotn want to just remove the equipment and let hte fluid out of the rack and have it dry up, that sucks. I want something smooth. Aside from the turninig radius of our cars (which is by far the worst of any car Ive ever driven) , I like hte ratio on ours w/ PS, I think its pretty responsive and I wouldnt want to sacrifice a shitty ratio just for no PS and little weight/power saveing

Hey what do you know, I found the answer to most of my questions.

The manual rack equiped cars are 4.25 turns lock to lock.
The power rack is 2.75 turns lock to lock.

I was also reading that people have been successful using the rack from a 93 colt. There is no information that I have seen yet on the ratio.

I wouldn't doubt that it is possible and there is another application that might fit it, however I have not seen where anyone has done it. One reason may be the lack of a 2G manual steering car to begin with. But like with the colt rack fitting the 1G, maybe some other rack would work.

Of course you can go the route many others do and cut the belt but I wouldn't. Mine is that way now because my pump is leaking and I havn't done the conversion yet. The PS has a better ratio than the manual because the hydraulics can compensate for the lack of mechanical leverage. Without them, it is a big PITA at slow speeds.

I have not heard of manual steering rack for 2G. I did see some guys just remove the power assist system and mussle their way around with non-assisted power rack, but that is not easy.

Also, if you have any desire to AutoX, do not get the manual rack! It is too slow for twisty racing!

A few years ago, RRE or DSS were talking about making manual racks with quicker ratios, but I do not know where that went.

The issue of mechanical advantage is still there. The quicker the manual rack, the more difficult it will be to turn.

I agree with GRNDSM about the AutoX, the manual rack, if you could do it, the response would not be as good as PS.

Yeah i have never driven with it off and that does seem like it would be a problem. I appreciate the info on that. I have always wondered about doing it but never knew if it was possible.
