Ok so long story short, i realized i dont have abs on my talon. I was in the fusebox today and noticed 2 blank slots that were labeled for abs fuses. When I bought my car i couldve sworn seeing ABS on the carfax report i had. The VIN plate for my car is held on by one rivet and the hole where the other one should be looks kinda beat up. So im thinkin the shady dealer i bought it from switched vins on me. Any way to find out if this vin was supposed to have ABS? here is the VIN: 4e3ak54f6se062933

Is your car fwd or awd? I can honestly say that I have never seen(nor heard of) a 2g awd without abs. I have seen several(actually most) 2g fwd without abs.

All 2g's share the same fuse box so the cars without abs just have blank slots in the fuse box. The abs cars utilize these blank spots to supply power to the abs unit. It wouldnt have been cost effective for mitsu to manufacture 2 diiferent fuse boxes for abs and non abs. I guess they learned their lesson with the 1g and just refined it on the 2g.

4 = US
e = Eagle
3 = car
a = airbags
k = FWD
5 = fancy
4 = hatchback
f = 2.0 T
6 = checksum
s = 1995
e = Normal, Ill
062933 = serial no.

The only thing that might relate to ABS is having a 5 in the 6th position. You have a "premium" car, but not a "special" (which would have a 6 there). But my 97 AWD w/ABS also has a 5, like yours.

You might look at the knuckles and hubs. ABS cars have a mounting point on the knuckle for the speed sensor and ridges on the axle ends.

I just converted my car to non abs. I highly doubt a cheap ass used car dealer would go thru the trouble of it. Pulling the bulb out and leaving the stuff there is more like it.

If given the choice between trusting a used-car dealer and Carfax, I'd flip a coin.

Call the dealer and ask. They will probably need the last 7 of the VIN and will be able to tell you for sure.

You know I was wondering the same thing about my car a while back. I just assumed the previous owner disabled the ABS. I thought all the turbo models had it.

Actually, no, they didnt. I have yet to see a 2g awd without abs but I have seen numerous 2g fwd turbo's without abs. I am currently working on a 97 gst that doesnt have abs. It is a spyder, leather interior, and all options(except abs). Thus far, I know you could get the gst without abs but I am still unsure about the awd.

Does anyone out there have a 2g awd that came without abs?

Im not really pressed about not having ABS, its just another piece of junk to get in the way. Just im pretty sure the carfax stated it had ABS, and if they switched my VIN for another car im gonna have some serious issues with the shady "dealer" that sold it to me.

Does the vin plate match the door jamb sticker vin?

Or the numerous other vin stickers located on various other parts of the car. Mine is a 92 and when it was stripped for paint, I counted at least 10 other vin stickers located on numerous body parts including the rear bumper.

Check the car over well and Im sure you will find the vin on other parts of the car. Dont rely on carfax because they can be wrong. Carfax is more of a company that just records info from dmv, dealerships, and insurance claims. It could be as simple as someone entering the wrong info when loading your car info on a computer. Carfax has no idea of what the car was equipped with when it left the factory. All they have records of is what humans typed into the database under your vehicle identification number. And carfax is not affiliated with the manufacturer in anyway, they are an independant company. Carfax has almost as much knowledge about your car as any random VW dealer has.
