Do I HAVE to have this bracket if I'm taking out my ps rack and throwing in a manual rack??? If so, why? Does it not hold it in there securely? Won't bolt up or what??? I was planning on throwing it in tomorrow while the motor is out and then put my new motor in the car to get that done (then just wait on my clutch so I can finish it all up).

I just got the rack in today and was browsing the feedback on the manual rack just for the heck of it when I noticed someone saying I need the bracket that holds in the rack. I don't have this part:mad:

I only get to work on my car every other weekend so I'll be pissed if I can't get this thing in tomorrow.

You need the bracket and bushing. Most racks from the junkyard will still have this bushing but not the bracket. It's $4 at Mitsubishi. Go tomorrow and buy one. They can have the part in 2 days I'm sure.

Why not just make one? It should be rather simple.

I don't know what it looks like. Having to drive about 40 miles to get to my car tomorrow. Would sure be nice if it were something simple. Don't have a clue what the part looks like that needs to be swapped out or what the difference is and won't know till I get there :(

There's a difference unfortunately. The power steering one won't work well. Go to mitsu. Ask for a steering rack bracket for the passenger side.

Alright well here's another question. Does this bracket go on after the manual rack is in? Does it go on bottom? I mainly wanna get the rack in there while the motor is out and then drop the motor in today. If the rack can at least be held up in there, I can always go back after I get the bracket and throw it up in there. Is that possible? Since my car is kinda far away it's kinda hard to go and look at it. Thanks!

Yes you can install it after the motor install the one bracket should hold it up there for non driving, sitting in the garage purposes until you get the correct one. It looks like a big "U" with 2 bolts holding the rack up. I've done the swap also and really like how things feel. Mike

I did the swap today. Here's the pic of the 2 racks side by side. The crap I was able to get rid of on the right, the lighter manual rack without all the crap on the left.

I used the stock bracket for now. It's actually pretty tight but I'll change it out later on. Here's a picture I took of the brack. Just left a lil gap which you can see but some caulk could clear that up. I'll probably just change out the bracket when I get the chance though.

Hey, I was wondering how much harder it is to get around in parking lots and other low speed parts of daily driving with the manual steering rack. Thanks.

Your no longer able to one arm it, its always 2 hands for me and i wouldnt have it any other way. I like it

Thats cool, I've read up a little bit on this swap, and I have driven a few cars without power steering and liked it as well, maybe I'll try the swap sometime...after I get it running again. :p

Well, when I did it, it was a pain. The splines didn't wanna go up in the shaft to the steering column too easy. I did it with the motor out. I could only imagine doing that crap with the motor in it.

I also did it with the engine out and due to the war with the splines my steering wheel has not bin upright since ROFL

we just finished mine a few weeks ago, that part sucked. we did it with the engine in. Needless to say we have some nice cuts on our arms
