my '92 laser, turbo AWD recently started spewing power steering fluid from the reservoir. the pump makes groaning noises when I turn the steering wheel. i have added fluid, it makes no difference, it just gets spewed out of the reservoir around the cap. any idea what is wrong? i dont want to replace the pump if it is something like a valve inside the reservoir that is stuck or something. help, i need to fix it tonight.

I am sufferning from a similar problem, My power steering resivor seeps fluid, buts its not that bad yet. I am curious to weather there are other people that have had the same problem and what they did you fix it.

Sorry i can not help you out with your problem.

More often then not when fluid spews out of the reservoir there is air entering the system. Air usually enters on the return (low pressure) side of the system. AIR CAN ENTER THE SYSTEM ON THE RETURN SIDE WITHOUT LEAKING FLUID.

If you have not changed your low side hoses (including your fill tube) in a while I suggest you try that first. You can use bulk return power steering hose and hose clamps to do this (this is the cheapest way). After changing the hoses, thoroughly bleed the air out of the system.

If problem persists then we can look at other possible problems that can cause this scenario that are not as common.

thanks for your suggestion, i will look into it tonight. the pump really groans when i turn the wheel at idle which makes me think that it is something more than air. im wondering if there might be a problem with the rack & pinion not letting the the fluid pass through properly or something along those lines. any other input is greatly appreciated.

The pump will moan, groan, and generally be noisy if there is air in the system. The noise will be louder when you turn the steering wheel (the pump is creating more psi when turning). The other problems can be a restriction somewhere in the system (possibly in the rack or the fluid reservoir), pump cavitation, etc. Hope it turns out to be something simple
