What date did the bigger brakes start showing up on the talons?
Just wondering if I have the big brakes or not

thats a negative dude....it would be 93' although I think someone swore that there 92 came with them from the factory. Just look to see if you have dual piston calipers up front...

The later 92's have them, but I don't remember which month they started using them. Like Candela said the easiest way to tell is just to go look. If you don't know what your looking for go find a late model AWD somewhere and if his brakes are about twice the size of your then you have 1 piston, if they are the same size you have 2 piston.

who here has done the early 1g to later 1g swap? was there a big difference? i need new rotors soon, and i'm wondering if it's worth the effort to locate some twin calipers and brackets while i'm replacing the rotors. installing them wouldn't be a real big deal, but hunting them down might be a hassle.

I think they would make an significant improvement over stock. Our 1pistons suck nutts as all of you know, they fade very quickly and have trouble slowing me down after the quarter mile sometimes...

Ive been told by numerous people that with some steel bradied lines, good brake pads and the larger rotor/calipers will make a noticable improvement. I think they are sliding calipers as well, ahich makes them very effective. Im planning on doing it to mine very soon...:thumb:

I have done the upgrade.

I think that takes you from a 225 mm (less than 10 inch rotor diameter!) to 275 mm (10.9 inch diameter). plus gets a thicker rotor too.

The swap was pretty easy once you have all the parts - brackets, linings, tools. I installed mine with "Green Stuff" EBC pads. It seems to work pretty well on the street. I haven't seen fade in normal driving around.

If you are serious about brakes though, even the big brake upgrade won't be enough. Rotors are still too small. You will want to be up in the 13 inch range. Upgrade the linings too if you can. Remove the backing plates for more cooling air. Keep a good eye on brake fluid - you will have to change it often.

Have fun!

The actual swap is about an additional 10 mins per side over just changing the pads and well worth it. If it wasn't for Mitsubishi doing my first two brake jobs for free I would have done it the first time the rotors warped.

It's true that after you've had big brakes for a while you'll start wanting more but it's such an improvement over the single piston calipers you won't be sorry.

If you look around you can find good used calipers and the mounting bracket for about $35 each. The cost of shims, pads, and rotors is about the same for either. You don't need to get fancy slotted or drilled rotors unless you like the look and are willing to pay the difference. Replace the brake hose no matter what, SS lines are a nice upgrade but fresh rubber hoses will provide 90% of what SS lines give in firmness and you don't have to inspect them every year like you need to with SS lines. (I did go SS when I upgraded)

Candela - The single piston calipers are basicly the same design, in both cases the caliper is a floating style riding on guide pins in the mounting bracket. They are not sliding calipers since they ride on the guide pins not a machined slipper.

The brackets that attach to the steering knuckle and contain the guide pins and hold the pads in place. Look at the forth picture down in the install VFAQ, the red part is the bracket. The caliper is just the piston part. They will usually come together with the caliper but to make sure you don't get a susprise you ask for the caliper with the mounting bracket. If your going to the junk yard call ahead and find out how many units they have and don't take the first one they bring if it doesn't look like the boots, seals, or pistons are good.

Check the Big Brake Info and the Big Brake Install VFAQ's for the specifics of what model and year car calipers to ask for.

This has been a good thread and I still have one question.

I havethe cailpiers shim kit and pads. What I dont have are the rotors.

I am upgrading my single piston to the dual pistion off a 95+ to my 1g NON ABS car. I am looking at just going to local auto parts store for the rotors. What Rotors do I ask for. When I go in I dont know if I should ask for 95 awd talon or gsx with abs or what. Any help would be appricated.

Make sure you don't wind up with newer style calipers that use a banjo bolt fitting to attach the brake line unless you have already got custom brake lines made up. I'm not sure but I think the 95+ calipers are all the newer style. I used the calipers off a '92 Diamante just to make sure I got the older style threaded fitting.

Yup I made that msitake the first time around. I got the banjo fitted ones. I gotthe female scre in type from a nice member of the board here. Awd20l who is a very nice guy and helpful also. Nice to talk to.

You can make the Banjo fitted ones work. You need to get 2g brake lines and a few other parts. It cost like 50 bucks in parts to do it that way. I just wanted to simple fye matters and searched for the female screw in type.

Thanks for the in put.
