hi there...
i wanted to search about this but i dont know the exact name to search it for, so here goes the questions.

1) in a tire we see this number 235/45/17... what is this called as? TIRE SPECS OR TIRE SIZE OR TIRE DIMENSIONS ANYTHING LIKE THAT?

2) 235/45/17 what does each of the number stand for??? i know the last 17 is the size of the rim.. what about the other 2?

3) so now i am buying a 17 inches rims with 40 offset.. can u guys tell me what are the tire options do i have and which one will give a comfortable and a stable ride? for example like the 205/40/17 or 235/45/17 which might be better... thanks :)

235/45/17

235-width of tread i believe
45-sidewall height
17- how big of a rim it will fit onto

235: width of the tread in mm.
45: aspect ratio, or the tire is 45% as tall as its width
r: simply means radial
17: wheel fitment size

There is usually a letter preceding the r. That would be the speed rating.

235/45/17
235 is the width of the tire in millimeters
the second number is the percent height of the tire as it is wide. with these numbers, the height is 45% of 235.
17 is the size of the rim the tire is to be mounted on
the letters that come after the second number are speedratings.
the letters zr, the r means radial tire. the z is the speedrating. z is over 168mph.
w is up to 168
v is up to 149
there are other letters but i don't feel like typing them all out.

17x7 on the rim means the rim is 17" in diameter with a width of 7"
7" rim i'd go 215/45/17. that might be too 'short.' 215/50/17 might be better. on a 7" rim, the most i personally would go with tire width is 225, but there are people running around with bigger than that.

so your advice is 225/50/17 ?

Those might rub and they are significantly taller than stock. I'd stay with 225/45/17's.

I belive you'll find 7" the minimum wheel width specified by most manufacturers of 225 width tires.
