rim/tire combo

i cant decide whether to go with a 16"rim with 225/50/zr16 or 17" with 225/45/zr17....this is for a 1g awd talon....street/strip....tires i was looking at were nitto 555 or toyo ra-1

depends on your goals. the 16's would be better for drag racing due to their lighter weight, but the 17's would give you brake clearance for upgraded rotors and the shorter sidewalls might make them better for autocrossing.

the two tires you've chosen are nothing alike, one is a decent performing street tire (555) the other is a competition performance tires (ra1). it sounds to me like you first need to figure out whether you want a race car or a street car, and just what you want to do with it. for the cheap/good looks side i'd go 555's and the 17's, but if performance in a straight line is your thing then it'd be 16" and the ra1's, of course if you want to turn corners and brake really well i'd go 17" and ra1's. the 16" and 555's just wouldn't be much good at anything i don't think except for being the cheapest option.
