1g coilovers

I know that JIC and Tein have coilovers for the 1g awd but be ready to spend a decent amount of money on coilovers or on any good suspension setup.

Tein makes the super street dampeners with pillow mounts (fronts has adjustable camber plate)

From Tein:
SUPER STREET

TEIN has developed advanced technology to design the shell case and stroke
to bring out the full potential of your vehicle. These features of the TEIN
Super Street Damper kit were designed with greater performance to satisfy
all your driving demands. This high performance damper can be used for
weekend racing and/or daily driving. The discomfort caused by uneven roads
or bumps are eliminated on daily street use. For race use, the ride height
adjustable system enables you to adjust ride height and 16 levels of damping
force. In other words, you can adjust your vehicle to meet all situations!

- High performance and cost effective
- 16 levels of damping force adjustment (compression and rebound together).
- Ride height adjustable
- New paint coating for rust prevention.
- Pillow ball upper mounts are included.
- Compatible with EDFC.
- Exclusive design for USA vehicle specifications (only available for the
U.S. Market).
- Available for overhaul in North America.
- Spring rate: front 504 lbs/in., rear 392 lbs/in.
- Drop rate: front -0.9 in. ~ -2.3 in., rear -1.2 in ~ -2.5 in.
- Part number: DSR80-2USS1
- MSRP: $1400.00

Most shops will give it to u 10% under MSRP so bout 1250-1300 is what I found on average.

someone i know just upgraded his suspension from the ground control/koni combo to the tein super street set up
he is very happy with the new suspension, although he said the GC/koni's squeeked or something, and he basicaly shelled out the money to get rid of that noise. the handeling isnt that much better, for the $400 price difference i dont really think its worth it. but then again i dont have anywhere near enough money for all the parts i want/need right now, tein is great for people with money to spare.
and i believe they make another set up for our cars, either a type HA or HE. i think i remember someone on the site getting them for a 1g, but i could be wrong, it might only be availible for the 2g. i never checked since i cant afford them.

Tein SuperStreet is the ONLY set up Tein has. The HAs ArcticTSi has is a one-off. I'm leaning towards the SS myself seeing that they are only a little more than a koni/H&R setup. Plus, if you spend more for the EDFC unit, you can adjust the valving while behind the wheel on the fly. To adjust the Koni rears, you have to uninstall them to get to the adjuster (kind of defeats the purpose of buying adjustable shocks does it?).

Since putting on a full 3" turbo back, my ground clearance has reduced significantly. Being able to set the height will be a plus and perhaps a money saver in the long run.

I've ridden and driven a 2G with AGXs with Progress Springs, and with Koni/Eibach/GC. The latter is better by far, but still not great. The GC kit is also not very well thought out. One of the parts broke within 2 hours of install on my friend's 2G. He ended up going to a machine shop to have custom parts made to make it as good as it can be. Not worth the $ and time IMHO.

If I had the cash I'd go with JIC coilovers. If you're near the area or willing to make a trip, get them at Road Race Engineering:

http://www.roadraceengineering.com/jicinfo.htm

The next best alternative is the DSS coilover sleeves made exactly for the 1g and Koni adjustable shocks.

I'm currently running Ground Control Coilover sleeves w/ 400lb/F, 350lb/R springs using KYB AGX adjustable shocks. Not a bad setup but there are squeaks here and there and the AGX's are crazy stiff. Not for a daily driver IMHO.

As for sway bars, get a rear ST 1" sway bar. No need for a front aftermarket since the stock one is thick enough as is...at least that's what the 1g autocrossers and road racers say. ;)

Well, for all out performance... and if I were to spend any time at the track... I would go for the JICs too. But, I don't have that kind of cash.

Plus, I have to be honest about this... sure I'd like to go to the track sometime or enlist in some pro courses at say Sears Point or Seca, but will I actually do it? Probably not, unless I win the friggin lottery or inhereit a bunch of cash (not a chance in hell).

So, if HopUp can sell the Tein SS for $900 (don't know about that yet, the 1G setup isn't listed on their site) it's worth a look since it's just a little more than the Koni/H&R setup. Plus, my tires are bald and my stock brakes are shot... have to think about replacing those too on a budget that... well, doesn't really exist.

Is the EDFC unit available for the SS on a 1G?

According to an email I got from Tein... yes. Call them. The answers you seek are only fingertips away.

Or you could just do track days at PIR, PR, Bremerton, and Spokane and spend $100-$150 per day.

No can do... moving back to SF end of the month. Sears Point or Infineon and Seca will be much closer... along with all of the fun twisty back country roads around Santa Cruz and Carmel.

Would love to stay in the NW, grew up here, but the job market blows and the employers blow even more. None of them are willing to pay living wages and turn around and complain about the poor economic outlook of both states. They never seem to understand that what's good for the employees are good for their business too.

I think we are all forgetting DSS's setup. Everyone that has ever installed a set does nothing but RAVE about them being better than GC, Tein's, and JIC. Do a serach for DSS in the supsension forum, there is one post that has a link to a guy from DSMtalk.com that has a set on his car. Super nice dude, super nice suspension setup. Not loud and clunky like the GC/Tein setups. It is what i plan on using in my Autox car. Plus, the guy who sells them at DSS is friggin sweet. He will help you through the enitre installation... OVER THE PHONE!

I have not forgotten. My considerations were strictly for true coilovers... not hacked or adpated coilovers. It is possible to make an adpated coilover to be every bit as good as a true fully integrated coilover, but the two aren't the same. Most true coilovers are monotube for one thing.

DDS is nothing more than GC's with better springs. The issue of mismatched damping and spring rate still exists since the kit is somewhat universal.

The only reason I'd consider it is if I use Koni Sports... but in order adjust the rear dampers on a 1G, one would have to remove the rear coilover assembly to gain access to the adjuster knob... completely defeating the point of using adjustable dampers.

JIC's have rear adjusters at the bottom, and Tein has the EDFC (which they claim will install into a 1G).

I know what you're thinking.. AGXs have adjusters that are easily accessible... no, I wouldn't spend a dime on AGXs. I've said it numerous times... drive a car with AGXs and then another with Konis. The difference is blatantly obvious. Just because one has spent money on product X doesn't make the product king.

I completly understand. Personnally I wanted to get the tein setup w/edfc but they couldnt tell me either way if it would work on a FWD. I still think it will, but am not about to drop 1500.00 (w/edfc) to find out. Let us see your new setup, and have fun carvin' the curves!
