It could be one of a few things.

The end clutch could have been installed wrong.

The splines in the clutch hub or planet could be stripped or the shaft broken.

There could be valve body issues.

There could be something else wrong in the unit causing slippage in overdrive.

No attempt to shift into overdrive can be electrical, slipping in overdrive after the 3-4 shift should take place is a hydro-mechanical problem.

What did the clutches that you took out look like?

Did you reseal the drum?

Did you air check it when you were done?

the first pad was ok, still has some lines but the others were completly worn. Also they were all completely black. I did reseal all the drum but i did not air test it. How do you do that? also i had a hard time getting it back on so i took off the funnel shaped coupling that connects the end clutch to the rest of the tranny. I know plymouthlaser.com said that you dont need to remove this but it made putting the EC on much easier. Was i not supposed to touch that?

edit: the tranny shifts into 4 but never makes contact and just revs.

You can take out whatever parts you like, as long as you properly reinstall them.

You can air check the drum by removing the valve body and blowing compressed air into the apply hole with a rubber tipped blow gun. You should hear a thud and no air leaking out.

At this point, rather than removing the valve body, you can also put a pressure gauge in the end clutch tap and drive the car, observe the pressure reading in 3rd and 4th.

The pressure tap is located in the end clutch housing, it has a 10mm head.
