I know that I will be needing to replace my tranny soon.

I am trying to decide between doing it myself or buying a complete tranny from TRE or John Shep.

If I do the work myself I would be forced to learn the process of rebuilding it, which is something I have not done before. My only tranny rebuilding experience is with old school chevy transmissions. I like the idea of doing research and learning how to do this. Also, I think It would be good to know. If any future tranny problems show up, I would be able to deal with those myself. My main concern here is that I will mess something up and potentially damage the expensive transmission parts. It seems like no matter how many people I talk to or how much research I do, there is always something that I should have did better when I finish working on a mod to my car.

With purchasing a compete tranny my only concern is price. How much money if any would be saved by doing the work on my own? Also I really like the idea of having a tranny that is put to gether by an expert. But does that also mean I should do the reading and try to become an expert too? Im confused.

Thanks for the feedback,
Greg

well i dont know about the m/t tranny but the cheepest i found to have an a/t tranny rebuilt is like $1500 parts and labor.

I am willing to pay the money to have a stronger transmission. But I am not sure if I want to just pay for parts and figure out how to do the work myself. Or buy a complete tranny from someone.

I think I would be able to do the work but I am not very confident. I replaced my clutch with out any major problems, but re-building the tranny with performance parts sounds a lot harder.

tre = team rip OFF

haha

About TRE, I have not heard anything negative about them in the past.
After reading thought the site I was almost ready to give them 3,500.. Luckily I decided to slow down and think about it. I usually prefer to shop around but sometimes its hard not to be inpulsive.

How do you guys like TRE? Anyone have a personal experience with their products?

why do u want to buy a whole trans? whats wrong with yours that it cant be rebuilt?
shepracing can do a basic rebuild for $895 thats alot cheaper than 3500

I kinda like the idea of having my current transmission re-built because of the price, but It has already been re-built in the past. The previous owner blew the center diff.

I guess there is no real reason to pay for a new one, but I was just thinking that it would be nice to have a quality transmission.

I was saw the mangnus one on their website. It looks nice, How do you modify a m/t transmission so that it wil shift with out the clutch?

I had John at TRE rebuild my 90 two years ago. I've got 35K+ miles on it now and it's still as good as the day I got it. He had a 1 week turn around. I'm not sure if that's typical, but I was happy. My bill ran $1200 and I got a basic rebuild, double 2nd syncros, metal magnet, and EVO shift forks, and a mainshft? (needed for upgrading a 90 to double 2nd syncros). He even threw in another good VC because mine was toasted, for free. Answered all my questions. I can't complain.

They get my vote.

when you said they had a 1 week turnaround time, was that from the day you had it shipped and then got it back? Also I'm curious to which company you used to ship the tranny and for how much? I have to get my tranny rebuilt and I'm probably gonna go with shep.

I delivered to their shop. It was technically done in less than a week. I dropped it off on a Saturday and picked it up the following Saturday.

No shipping needed.
