I am in the process of removing my transmission on a 94 eclipse fwd,
I have the half shafts knocked out of the hub and the steering rod off,
what is the next procedure ? I cant get the half shaft out of the hub,
do you have to remove the hub from the lower ball joint, and if so, do
you have to cage the strut from flying apart, or will it stay together ?
Can you take the hub off the lower ball joint and just swing the hub
out to get the half shaft out? Or do you pry it out of the transaxle at this point ? Thanks in advance.

MY REPLIES IN CAPS...

I cant get the half shaft out of the hub,do you have to remove the hub from the lower ball joint,

SO YOU HAVE IT LOOSE IN THE HUB BUT NOT ENOUGH CLEARANCE TO FREE IT - CORRECT? & NO YOU DON'T HAVE TO MESS WITH THE LOWER BALL JOINTS - OR THE TIE RODS EITHER!

and if so, doyou have to cage the strut from flying apart, or will it stay together ?

YOU DO HAVE TO UNBOLT THE LOWER STRUT FASTENERS FROM THE HUB - THE STRUT WILL NOT GO 'SPLOING" IT'S AN ASSEMBLY.

Can you take the hub off the lower ball joint and just swing the hub
out to get the half shaft out?

DON'T DO THAT.

Or do you pry it out of the transaxle at this point ?

PASSENGER SIDE YES - AFTER UNBOLTING THE LOWER STRUT FASTENERS & TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL TO GAIN ENOUGH ROOM TO FREE IT FROM HUB. BE CAREFUL NOT TO STRESS THE BRAKE LINE.

(TALKING DRIVER'S SIDE ONLY HERE) - WHEN YOU UNBOLT THE STRUT FROM THE HUB & TURN THE STEERING WHEEL YOU HAVE ENOUGH ROOM TO KNOCK THE CV SHAFT OUTWARD FROM THE CENTER BEARING - THEN PUT THE CV SHAFT OVER THE BEARING & SLIDE IT INWARD TILL FREE OF HUB - THEN REMOVE.

Thanks in advance.Dave
GOOD LUCK!

I would like to correct Buck,,,
Buck, i see you own an AWD dsm,, and apparently you do not relize that your AWD has a different drivers side axle then our FWD dsm's do. so please dont take offense to the fact that im posting the CORRECT way to remove the FWD axles....
Dklue,,
YES you need to remove the lower balljoint!
you WILL NOT have enough room otherwise to get the axle out.
simple remove the nut on top of the balljoint, and using a sutable prybar, pop the lower arm down and out of the knuckle.
dont worry about the strut, it will stay put.
once you have done this,, and also poped out the tierod as well.
and of course the main nut on the axle that holds it into the hub, you can then remove the axle,,
i use a large rubber hammer to smack the outter end of the axle, being carefull not to damage the threads. and smack it inward to pop it out of the knuckle.
then simple take a prybar and carefully pop the other end of the axle (the end going into the transaxle) out of the transaxle by putting it in between the transaxle and the inner knucle of the axle. i have found that normaly the drivers side pops out rather easy while the passengers side usaly takes a bit more to pop.
hope this helps and your not lookin for a bearing that isnt there LOL (awd axle)

just wanted to add,, as far as unbolting the strut from the knuckle rather then the balljoint, that will work also,, i hav simple found it easyer to pop the balljoint instead.
