Does anyone have any helpfull steps in removing an automatic transmission out of a 95 turbo? I have the entire passenger side dropped out, tire, strut, lower control arm, and drive shaft. I have the driver side drive shaft out, but now what?

Any help would be great, pictures would be even better.

Thanks guys

Obviously detach all the electrical connections and speedometer. The speedo sensor thingy was a BIOTCH for me to get out. The nuts are hard to get to, one of them was!!

A tranny jack would help but I am thinking you are probally gonna use a regular jack to lower it right? We dropped mine down, not lifted out since I kept the engine in like you are.

You already have the most time consuming part done really. Drain the fluids of course, both plugs, there are 2. Then it is just a matter of undoing all the bolts that hold it in. I do not remember how many, but you did get most of the hard part done already.;)

I do remember that i had to take the driver's side of also for some reason?

You will probally have to pry the tranny off and be very careful doing so. Have a jack under it already up touching the bottom so it doesn't fall. Lottsa' wriggling the tranny to get it to come free.

I don't think I helped much but I tried. Good luck and use extra jack stands. You might really have to tug on that tranny!

Thanks for the help, pulling and tugging sounds like I am going to be in there awhile. Do you have any pictures of when you pulled yours out? Second where is the speedometer sensor?

Thanks

I can only speak from experience on 1G's, but if 2g's are packaged the same, I have a helpful trick.

With the 1G cars, the packageing on the pass side of the tranny (very end) to the frame rail is TIGHT. You'll pull your hair out trying to wiggle the tranny away from the engine block/flywheel and not get it caught up with the farme.

I found it helpfull to remove* the drivers side engine mount and jack the engine (on the drivers side) up around 1 - 3 inches. Use your discreation. You can see when you do this you'll be stretching the front/rear engine mounts. This will lower the tranny enough to clear the frame and allow you to back it off the engine block.

*edit: replace "loosen" with " remove"

yes, once we popped thr tranny free it was VERY tight wriggling it out and down at the same time and not hang up on something or other. I think that is part of the reason I took the driver's side wheel off...to get under better and push like hell!!!

Oh, 69 luv, the speedometer sensor thing was located on top of the tranny below the throttle body area. Kinda resembles a big spark plug boot. I recall it being held in by 2 or 3 bolts but one of them is under a bracket which we made a hole thru so we could get a socket on the darn bolt...I am sure there is an easier way and maybe with the engine out and tranny coming up and out would have been different.

So I got it out, and let me just say this.....what a holy not cool thing to remove from a car....

I ended up not removing the speedometer sensor, just unpluggin it by pulling the c-clip.

Here is how I pulled it out for anyone else that wants to know:

1. Unplugged all sensors, and brackets, labeling each with masking tape and writting the number on a pad of paper with where it went.
2. Second started with the transmission mounts, passenger side, rear and front. I had to pull the whole entire mount off, including the mounting plate. I also removed the lower cross member.
3. Starting from the front, I removed all the bolts 8 I think total. The ones in the back, kind of hard, but with a long extension, and some patience it was done.
4. Removing, hmmmm, lets just say it isn't light, and its tighter than a virgin on prom night, but rotating the trans, where the transfer case can clear the lower rear crossmember. Rotating it, pulling out, down, and it finally cleared the torque converter.

Anyone else that has to do this, good luck, have a friend, some beer, and a afternoon that you want to piss away. By the way for anyone wanting to know, I did this in my garage with two floor jacks, and 4 jack stands...

damn..I should have looked for that...i am sure that is the reason mine doesn't work anymore...cause I took it completely out!!

You are supposed to unbolt the converter and remove it with the trans. That is why you had so much trouble.

If you attempt to reinstall it the way that you took it out, I assure you that it will only last for two or three blocks, as you will have crushed the pump.

John,
I put a post up regarding putting the tranny back in correctly. If you get a chance to answer it here thats cool as I am sure someone else will benifit as well. I sure as hell do not want to crush my pump when putting my new IPT tranny in...so what's the method? Or will you make a house call? :D

Sure, I'll make a house call- you're only 200 miles away.
You can post it on my forum also- if you would like.

Well that is why I asked if there was any tricks to removing the trans. Wish I would have known that I could have pulled the torque converter off first. I persume that its the bolts on the back of the flywheel right? So when I put the trans back in, lay the torque converter in the trans put it up there, and then find some way to get it on the out put shaft of the motor? That sounds like some bruised and scraped nuckels again...

Hopefully when this gets done I will be getting some time slips up for everyone. Don't know if I will be in the 11's or not, but I am hoping that the garrett turbo puts me somewhere close.
