In 2 months i will be contacting Team Rip Engineering to either rebuild my failing 5 speed or purchase a new tranny fully built from them. My question is about the gearing of the aftermarket 5th gear sets they sell ,and what speed they will reach. What is the highest speed that can be attained from the stock mitsubishi 5th gear? Does the stock 5th gearing differ much between the 1st and second generation DSM's. What speed should the 10% taller and 25% taller TRE 5th gears reach on a well built car.Lastly i was thinking about fuel milage would a taller 5th help my car get better fuel milage or would there not be enough payoff to warrent the taller 5th. Thanks for any help or advice that anyone can offer and safe and happy Holidays to everyone in the DSM community .
thanks Joe

TRE has 2 types of 5th gears, they have a "Larger" 5th gear which is 10% larger than stock... And they have a "Top Speed" 5th gear, i think its 25% larger than stock. Our Stock 1G AWD trannys 5th gear is good for 168 mph ( Im 90% Sure)

I think TRE's 5th gears are Straight Cut gears, which means that it will make the same sound as your car does when you are in reverse ( That loud Whine noise) Its sounds like a bad ass super charger!

thats exactly what it sounds like right now straight cut race gears it whined like a mother right before i parked it.Now you said you think its 168 for stock i just read an article in SCC a 1G eclipse with an FPgreen that reached 184 in 31 seconds. 184 is 10% more than 168 exactly which would make the max speed 25% taller gear reach a throretical speed of 210 mph .I dont know if these stats are true but it sounds right. Now if i have a 10% taller or 25% taller 5th will that mean my RPM's will be lower when i shift into 5th than with a shorter stock 5th . I sorry if this sounds like a novice question i just wanna learn as much as i can before purchasing this tranny.

I believe their website used to state that the top speed 25% gearset would hit 208MPH. The shorter one calculates to about 187MPH.

yeah, if you are driving a stock 1G AWD in 5th gear at 65 mph, it will be at like 3,000 rpm, now with the taller gears, it will be lower. youll need a big turbo to push you to reach the most of 5th gear.
