I had an act 2600 on my 97 gsx and after 8000 miles it's already toast. I want to get the same pressure plate again, but put in a puck style disk rather than the street disk. Anyone know what the absolute CHEAPEST place is to but this stuff ( I need the friction surface for a fidanza flywheel too ) because the best I have found so far was at roadraceengineering which is where I got this stuff in the first place. They charge $395 for the clutch and then another $50 for the friction surface. I am looking at around 400 whp, so would I be best off with this combo or should I just jump up to a 2900? I have actually seen that the 2900s are cheaper ... maybe for lack in demand? Thanks.

Although I don't have one yet, two local DSM shops in VA are starting to reccomend the SPEC clutches over ACT. I'm going to get a stage three rated at 415hp and held 475 on the shops GSX. I got to feel the clutch and it is alot lighter then ACT. Link Only problem is I can't find to many DSM people with them yet since it is a somewhat new thing. Alot of the Mustang and F-body people love them though.

I've had my SPEC Stage 2 paired with an ACT Flywheel for 4 months and 4500 miles or so. It grabs/releases very quickly due to being segmented, which is in-between a puck clutch and a full-face disk. Stalled the engine the first time I tried backing out of the driveway, heh. The clutch can be hard to modulate during launches, as it seems to grab more the hotter it gets, to a point(I guess, I've never actually felt it slip). The pedal pressure of the SPEC is a little higher than stock. There are a few other local DSMers running it as well, and I've never heard anything but praise for it.

I have some lingering doubts about its lifetime, as the kevlar friction material looks pretty thin.

In your position though, the 6-puck ACT clutch disk COULD be a decent alternative. Due to the on/off nature of pucked disks, you'll have to be extra careful while driving not let the clutch out too quickly between shifts and while launching. Otherwise you'll probably start breaking drivetrain parts. The 6-puck disk is the cheapest alternative because you can probably re-use your pressure plate.

If you don't mind a stiff pedal, the 2900 with a street disk will hold gobs of torque. Cokic and Shepard both run ACT 2900s with street disks, which helps keep parts from braking. The price of the 2900 with a street disk is probably comparable to the price of the SPEC clutch.

I went with the SPEC mainly because I like the way it feels vs the ACT 2600 w/street disk.

You think I can reuse the pressure plate with a puck but not a street disk? Or you're saying I can reuse it period? I'm really iffy about reusing it because I don't know how long it will hold up for, but then I don't want to spend all the money for new stuff either till this is 100% dead. Guess I'm kinda backed into a corner ..

I believe ACT says that the pressure plate is good through a couple of clutch disks, which is the reason you can buy just the disk. The reason I didn't mention just getting a new street disk is that I was under the impression you wanted to try something different. You might try calling a vendor or two up and getting their opinion on reusing pressure plates.

Its worked fine for me before though.
