Better AWD tranny - 1g or 2g?

For a custom app, so mounts and such will be custom anyway. Which one is better and why? Manual obviously.

Same-same, once you get past the 3-bolt rear axles. After 93(?) there were improved 2nd gear synchros. The mounts didn't change.

Will any year work fine with a 4-bolt rear?

Actually 95+ use different mounting positions that the 1g tranny's. The actual mounts are completely different also.
