I have had BAD trouble with a 98 Eclipse RS that I purchased. The car has a Star Performance Stage 2 Kit.

Numerous mechanics have noted that my car is operating in limp mode. I've been told that this means the car has transmission issues.:( I replaced the transmission for $800 and have had the same issues. At first, I just had the speed sensor replaced for $300. After that work my speedometer failed to work anymore. At this point I'm at wits end. Having replaced the transmission and seeing the same symptoms, the only other explanation the mechanics have given me is the possibility that I need to have my vehicle's ECU reprogrammed, reset, recalibated, etc.:barf:

Is there anyone with a vague idea or similar scenario? If so, what did it take to solve your difficulties??? :thumb:

Typically, "limp mode" has nothing to do with the tranny. It means that one or more of the engine sensors are reading so far out of range that the ECU can't run in normal closed loop mode. The ECU has a backup program called "limp mode" that lets the ECU ignore the errant sensor data and lets the car run off pre-programmed values. It won't run very well in limp mode.

What exactly is the car doing? What symptoms make it seem like tranny trouble?

Yes Limp Mode is in reference to your transmission TCU. This means your car is runnning on default settings in order for it to drive. Does your automatic trans seems to be stuck in 3rd gear? Its a definet electrical problem start with sensors on the trans then up to your TCU let me know what you find

Thanx for all the responses guys. I genuinely appreciate all of the responses. My car is currently in a reputable shop recommended to me by the local mistu tuner gurus. He's giving me a diagnosis monday. I just want the pain to end!!!!!

When you guys talk about resetting the TCU, what exactly do you mean. I've heard it's as simple as disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes. What do you guys think?

That would work as resetting it, but i think your problem is either

1. bad sensors on the trans
2. Bad TCU
3. Wiring from sensors on trans to tcu came unhooked

Look it all over but i dont think resetting it will fix your problem

1. where are the sensors located. If they're in the trans then swapping out transmissions like Idid should have fixed that right?

2. OH SHIT!!!!! How much are those and who the hell do I get one from besides hitting the dealership up

3. I hope to GOD this is the problem.... how would something like that be fixed? How much does that cost???

Well im not sure where the sensors are located on a 2G tranny, but on my 1G theyre quite a few all on top have your local mitsu dealer check them A new TCU from the dealer is expensive i was quoted $800 for a reman from the dealer, better off looking at a junkyard and/or ebay. Stop being incompatent and look to see if all the sensors on your trans are plugged in good luck

Okay then....

what does a transmission sensor look like

I've been researching parts in the transmission and I wanted to know what people think of these ideas

where is the vehicle speed sensor located and what does it look like. I swear I need some sort of manual or pictorial breakdown to refer back to...

throttle position sensor
shift solenoids

what do all these things look like? I would love to look for these things and tinker with them.. Eventually I'll find some manuals for myself but if someone knows where I can find stuff like that then let me know...

Dude, if you figure it out. PM me. I'm having some serious issues with my car-whcih just had a new trans put in also.

Well, the official word is this.....

The latest diagnostic revealed codes for the vehicle speed sensor. I have decided to have it replaced. I also checked on the replacement transmission work. The original vehicle speed sensor and the output speed sensor from the recent work are still in my car. This is why they believe the problem is vehicle speed sensor. Would that explain the bad speedometer too?

GSntncT:
Dude what sort of problems are you having... I have no idea how to help because you didn't tell me anything useful...

DID NOT WORK!!!!!!!!!

It's the COMPUTER!!!!!!!!!!

had sensors replaced just in case and dealership is installing new comp tomorrow morning.....

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay guys, here is the new problem. Had the tcu, sensors replaced. The ground wire running from my custom dash display lights is supposedly the cause of my shorts. They fixed that. Does anyone know what causes a car's transmission to not hit overdrive. In other words, my car shifts like an automatic and wont pass third gear. Someone help me out here.

I don't know what else to do. I'm ready to kill someone and the only person close enough is myself...:(
