how hard is it to install an extended pushrod into the slave cylinder?

Not hard.

Gravy, just drop the slave cylinder and put it in. Only two bolts, and the clutch line should allow you enough movement. Not much holds them in, just the rubber accordian in the notch. Spray the new rod and the rubber with a little WD-40 so it'll slide into place.
