I finished my spyder a/t to m/t swap last week. total cost aroud $1,000 (got the tranny, pedals and shifter for $250) and about 12 hours or so. Well worth it, I am in the shifting world again!!!!! Easy project to do just takes a little time. time to put on some miles!

Did you run into anything unexpected? I'll be converting my 96 TSi over to a 5-speed as soon as I get my bolts and clutch line arrive. (I have everything else sitting at my house!)

Were the mounting brackets the same? Did you have to rewire anything?

Thanks
Mike

This swap was very easy. The hardest thing I ran into was getting the rear motor mount to line up. you need the 5 speed mounts which I had it just took some shifting of the engine, jacking up and swearing like a mofo to get it in. You will need to get some break line for the clutch to go from the master cyl. down to the braided ss line. When I bought the ss line I thought it was going to go all the way. (it did not) Dont for get flywheel bolts, those are the only bolts you will need. dont forget the 5 speed starter, its diff. than the a/t starter.

The only thing you will need to rewire is the reverse lights, transmission position switch (neutral safety switch) and cruise control. You will need the plug for the reverse lights that goes into the tranny. look at the color wires on that plug and thats the color wires you will need to tap into in the harness that went to the a/t shifting plate or link (what ever you want to call it) The safety switch you need to splice 2 sets of wires together. I forget which ones, when you are ready to do your swap let me know and I will run out and check which ones you will need. As far as the cruise, hopefully I will have that working this weekend.
Any other questions ask away and good luck.

Sounds like I have everything then. Luckily the trans I got from a salavage yard has all the sensors still on the transmission.

Did you reuse the automatic trans front axles? Or did you have to buy new ones for the 5-speed? I'd like to start on the swap this weekend (depending if I get my 5-speed start, flywheel bolts, and pressure plate bolts from Mitsubishi Graveyard by Friday).

I really appreciate your help on this. Most threads on a/t to m/t end after the parts list.

Thanks,

Mike

I am about to do the swap also, and as far as I know the front axles are different between 2G Auto and M/T. I have also looked on CAPS and the part numbers between the auto and M/T are different. You will also need to change the transfer case and rear differential.

I was aware of the different part numbers in CAPS, but I've read post of other's have used the a/t axles with no problems.

but to be on the safe side, I may go out and buy some replacement axles.

not sure about the awd but on my gst spyder I used the same axels from the a/t on the m/t and they work great with no problems. I have 400 miles on the clutch and its time to start upping da boost!! Much faster at 10psi in m/t than my a/t was at 20 psi.

Don't know why everyone thinks I'm AWD... I ONLY WISH I WAS!

alright, so the axles are the same. Now if only my starter and bolts would arrive...

Did you ever look to see the wires that need to be spliced with safety switch? Same goes for the cruise control.
