How do you if the throw out bearing is bad?

I just put a new motor and ACT 2600 with mitsu throw out bearing in my car. It worked fine at first but now the car will hardly go into gear when I'm at complete stop. It feels like your trying to put it in gear with out pushing the clutch in. The rod on the slave cylinder pushes the clutch fork likes it's supposed to. There is a squeaking noise coming from inside the bell housing when you push the pedal in and out. It sounds like it's the throw out bearing sliding back and forth. Does this mean it's bad? If not any ideas on why the car will not go into gear would be great. It shifted perfect at first but after a few days it became notchy and now it won't go in at all.

I had a couple of noises on my neon as far as the clutch goes. I found the throw out bearing was no longer holding to the fork. The designs are different between your eclipse and my neon but normally the symptoms will be the same. They will create a noise because the bearing is constantly touching the spring fingers of the pressure plate. The retainer on one side of mine broke and this meant it no longer was sticking to the fork.

From the description yours doesn't sound like a throw-out bearing. Sounds more like lack of lubrication in the trans or air in the clutch lines. I know you said it worked at first and that the piston on the slave is moving but I'd still double check the clutch lines, re-bleed them, and check the trans fluid. When you put the clutch in you did remember to fill it back up with new syncroshift/preferred lube. That would definitely cause some shifting problems.

doesnt sound like the throwout bearin to me, my throw out bearin was going out and it would make a loud rubbin metal sound when shiftin at high rpms. now the clutch wont disengage

cbgst, mine is doing that exact thing. i mean the hard shifting and the clutch gets all hard, the squeak when i press on the clutch pedal. i also believe its my throwout bearing or the throwout bearing retainer.

i love this site but dont listen to everyone, i got $100.00 that says the guys who responded to this thread ARE NOT transmission specialists. hey neither am i but at least im not giving info that may or may not be true based on my own experiences. no offense doug99rs i know youre a chrysler tech and seem to know what youre talkin about but unless u specialize in tranny work u just dont have my trust in this department. :dsm:

Ok trans fluid(syncro shift) is perfect, lines have been bleed( no air came out), and the pedal feels stiff like normal. I took the boot off around the clutch fork and it's working properly also. The fork moves as far as it possibly can go without hitting the bell housing. It has to be something inside the bell housing( clutch, throw out bearing, broken fork?????) take your pick but it's definitly not outside were I can see it. There is also a rattling sound coming from it now and I can feel the rattle in the clutch pedal. It has to be inside but any ideas before I take the tranny out? Is it possible that maybe the bolts holding the pressure plate to the flywheel are starting to back out ( I forgot to use locktite). Keep the info coming I really appreciate it.

thats def your problem man. loctite is a must. anyway i have the same symptoms as u except the rattling. have u ever launched it when its hard? i did and it got soft. which leads me to believe the TOB is getting stuck on the TOB RETAINER. i know mine is not hydraulic related cause i bled it yesterdya and no air in the lines. also i replaced the master and slave in april.:dsm: good luck

Here is an intesting thought...cause my friends did the same thing. Did you get your flywheel resurfaced?...if so remember that the flywheels has a step..so there are two parts to it...the contact surface and the mounting surface. Both surfaces need the same ammount of material taken off. Iven better is that a friend of mine said he had toi take one off more than the other. I will see what side and what amount were removed and let you know.

There could also be the possibility that the flywheel is had too much taken off... and the clutch could be hitting the flywheel bolts. Please keep me updated as mine has started doing it too and I have not gotten around to doing the work yet

I did have the flywheel resurfaced and the step height was checked ( not sure how much was taken off of each surface but I gave him the height from RRE website) both surfaces were resurfaced though. I'm pretty sure a bolt/bolts backed out of either the flywheel or the pressure plate. The tranny is coming out either tomarrow or the next day so I'll know more then. I don't think too much was taken off because it worked perfect and I do mean perfect at first. When the knocking started is when it quit working. I'll keep you updated though. If it is a bolt backed out it's my own stupidty and I guess I deserve this for forgetting locktite. Oh well I'm getting good at pulling trannies. This will the third one in 2 months (1st on my car the other 2 were on my friends).

ya please keep me updated on what you find...mine is doing the exact same thing and did locktite the bolts

Well, he's not a "Wiseman" for nothing... he does know his stuff. And to me, it looks like he posted from an experience he had, just as you did. I don't see how he should be trusted any less than you in this case.

Well the transmisson is out and I found the problem and it's a big problem. All 6 bolts in the flywheel sheered off. I've never even heard of this happening to anyone. This isn't a joke either. When I unbolted the tranny it just fell out flywheel and all. Anyone got any ideas that may have caused this or has this happened to anyone else?

The information I provided was in the ball park and I knew that to be the case. That's why I added it in there. When I don't know what I'm talking about, I normally don't pipe up. When I'm in the ball park and find someone else's input to better relate to the concern I'll be the first to point it out.

when my fisrt clutch went bad, the clutch springs and their casing looked like they made contact with the flywheels bolts...and like I said my cars is doing it again though I have not pulled the tranny yet. Again, I am wondering if it is a step problem or maybe our flywheels are too out of specs or thin and just need to be tossed
