alright i have been experincing this noise for months now. in between shifts or when the car jerks really hard my driveshaft makes a clink clink noise, like solid metal hitting solid metal. now if it was the carrier bearings wouldnt it vibrate and make more of a thump noise hitting the floor? it doesnt do that just a solid clink clink noise.

i went underneath my car and tried moving it up and down. there was a lil play but it took some force and it didnt move much at all. how much play should their be to know if the carrier bearings are bad or not? could it be u joints? i only have 59k miles on this car. maybe they need to be greased?

i did a search on this many times and no one seems to have a reasonable symptom for if its the carrier bearings or u joints. someone please help im bringing it to someone soon to have the clutch done a t belt so i dont wanna have to do this too cause the bill will be outrageous. :dsm:

i didnt see any grease fittings on our driveshaft u-joints. anybody know if they even have grease fittings on them or are our cars just officially ###?

its probally hitting ur exhaust, if u have an exhaust that comes close to the driveshaft that is
my carrier bearings are bad and they make a squeeling noise that sounds like a band saw, and yes its a solid thump on the underside of the car when my driveshaft his

it does sound like its hitting my exhaust. i have the n1 by the way and ive already gone under there and pryed the hangers down and over away from my driveshaft. i dont see how it could still be hitting really. it just sounds like theres play in the drivesjaft itself maybe thats y its hitting the exhaust. i dunno im gonna grease my u joints tomorrow as well as do the carrier bearings. does anyone know if our u joints even have grease fittings so u can grease them? i looked and didnt see any....................

my car also makes a kinda rattling noise that sounds kind of like when u shake your keys, its also comming from around the front berring or the t-case

if u do change ur carrier berrings yourself make sure to tell me how difficult it was and what tools you used, me and my friend usually repair everything on our cars but from what i have read u need a few special tools to remove the carrier berrings and to put the new ones on, even if u onluy inspect them tell me how hard it was to do, id much rather replace mine myself if i can
i was going to talk to my one friend and see if he would help me do it in his race car garage/shop, they race 80s stock cars and shifter carts, im pretty sure he put a driveshaft in his stang himself, im thinking i may as well buy an aluminus driveshaft and out that in with the new berrings, but if its not that hard me and my mechanic can do it ourselvs

this is no rattling man. this is a solid clink clink noise that almost sounds like its with the rotation of the driveshaft. it does it when i get on the gas hard real quick and let off real quick. clink clink clink. solid metal hitting solid metal noise. ive narrowed it down to be my driveshaft u-joints. i just dont know what the hell else it could be. maybe a mount but theres no abnormal vibration at all!!!

heres my question, HAS ANYONE EVER HAD THEIR DRIVESHAFT U JOINTS GO? WHAT DID IT DO WHEN THEY WENT? DID THEY MAKE THE NOISE I DESCRIBED? WAS THERE ABNORMAL PLAY IN THE DRIVESHAFT IF U GET UNDER THE CAR AND ROTATE IT WITH YOUR HAND??????? I COULD ROTATE MINE ONLY A LITTLE BIT.

OUT OF ALL THE MENBVERS ON THIS SITE I KNOW SOMEONE KNOWS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE WHEN THE UJOINTS ON THE DRIVESHAFT ARE JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH YEA AND Y THE FAWK DONT OUR U JOINTS HAVE GREASE FITTINGS?????????????? I HATE THIS STUPID CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just got out from under my car and now i noticed that when i try to rotate the driveshaft where it connects to the x-fer case i hear that same very same clink noise except not as loud cause of course i cant rotate it all the way or as hard as the motor/tranny does. anyone know y it would do that? im going to proceed to try and take the driveshaft propeller out of the x-fer case and take a look see.

if u paid attention u would have realized i have that clicky noise and dude dont whore my thread if u have a problem make your own thread, now people are gonna click on this thread and not even bother reading through all this gobbly gook and not be able to help me out. MAKE YOUR OWN THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im buying a new car :barf:

alright now i believe its my viscous coupling. maybe theres excessive endplay on the driveshaft causing it to move in and out of the t case and that could be my noise? anybody have that noise happen?

im thinking along the lines of getting the VCE from www.machv.com.

in this picture below, i went under my car and that is my driveshaft where it connects to the x fer case. i pulled in and out. i marked where the driveshaft and dust seal guard off the xfer case line up, then i marked it while pulling it out, telling me how much play, (pulling in and out on the driveshaft) there is. u guys let me know if this is normal.

if i am correct the viscous coupling is further back behind the second carrier bearing correct?

i have the same problem its your bushings mine does it to o when i looked under the car and turned it made the sound go to pepboys or auto zone and get those bushings

well i tried to do the fill the carrier bearing boots with silicone and when i tuned them around, there was no holes. looks like that only works for a 1g. but what i did do was cut a hole in the bushings, pumped them full of silicone and waited for it to dry. the noise didnt fully go away but alot less noticeable. i put more in today. and dont fret, when the silicone dries, it wont let any dirt into the carrier bearing cause it wil fill the hole u cut in the bushing. its alot easier to do also and less time consuming. just let that shit dry. :dsm:

My clinking was from the rear end when i was coasting while the transmmission was still in gear. I'm going to change my oil and see if mine quiets up.
The driveshaft should fit in the X-fer case, and shuoldn't be too much forward/aft movement. You may have some bearings going out on the driveshaft, or perhaps some universal joints???
No, not all U-joints have grease fittings.

its not the carrier bearings, sometimes it sounds as if its at the front, like right where the u joints are by the xfer case and then the rear, where the u joints are in the back. and its a clink noise, but loud and solid sounding. its def a driveshaft noise. also when im on a hill and i make the car like try and stay in one spot or just creep up the hill while giving it gas and letting the clutch out a bit, it will clink. i dunno i think u joints but everyone disagrees with me cause they say they are sealed and connot go bad

y the hell did u respond to this thread????? its like 8 months old. and for the record i didnt yell at neone. i love these people along with this site along with dsm's.

it was the front lower motor mount, one of the bolts that hold it to the crossmember stripped out and fell out. it was clanging around.

He probably responded because it didn't sound like you had fixed your problem. You should always post what solved your problem. :thumb:

Glad to hear you got it fixed.

(I responded to your post because you asked the question: "y the hell did u respond to this thread?????" :p )

Happy DSMing
