Cant get tranny back in car!!!!

I pulled my tranny for a clutch/flywheel replacement. The problem is that i cant get the tranny back in. I have my car on jackstands in my driveway and am using a floor jack with a transmission adapter. I can get the bell housing over the pressure plate but if you are looking in from the passenger wheel the left side will not slide forward on the the dowel. I can only get the right side pretty close. I have the shifter in nuetral, and i put it in gear and turned the crank and watched the splines move inside the axle housings, so i know that the input shaft is lining up right with the friction disk. It is so frusterating, i have been working for over 12 hours to try and get this back in with no sucess. I have a track day on wednesday i would really like to get to. Any ideas?

Sorry to hear about your troubles, I just spent a hour trying to remove the roll pin on the 5th gear shift fork.

Check that the tranny isn't tilted top to bottom, or turned slightly. It needs to be lined up really well for it to slide onto the dowels. Play around with the trans jack to change the angles, and if it looks like it's close but not quite going in, sometimes a hard push will do the trick.

Yeah iv been working on it with my dad and brother and we have tried just about every angle and approach it seems like, and we can never get that left side to line up because there is that damn frame piece that sticks out over there and it keeps hitting the tranny. I might just get an overhead lift for a day and try that, or maybe pay someone to come to my house and put it in for me cause it seems like i just cant do it.

Nobody? I really need to get this back in asap and i have have no idea what to do. Nobody else has ever had a problem getting on back in?

Unless you damaged something taking i t off, i cant see it not going back on the right way... wiggle that sob around until it slides on. sometimes you just have to toy with it a little bit to get it on... i found it difficult to take off and put on even with the engine out of the car..

Check the clutch disk. I was helping a friend put in a TRE Trans and we had lined up the clutch disk improperly. The input shaft would never line up with the disc and the bell-housing dowels would never line up. Dropped the trans, repositioned the disc and it slid right in.

Yeah i went out a rented an overhead hoist. Then i used the floor jack to move the engine. Turns out the engine was just at a height where it was impossible to get the tranny to line up with the frame, just had to raise it a bit. So now its in, time to put the rest of the car back together.

i had the same problem with my 1g so i hope i can help you. there was a triangular piece of metal towards the firewall near the passenger side A arm. it has 3-5 bolts holding it on i cant remember but it comes out about an inch like a lip that 1 inch of clearance made all the difference in getting my trans back in. good luck
