Can I still drive around with a broken front diff?

Something came out of my front differential and put a 1 1/2" hole in the bellhousing. Thing is, my car still drives fine, but leaks transmission fluid like crazy... If I welded the hole, do you think it would be alright to drive around with the differential being a little messed up? Maybe for a couple thousand miles so I could save up some $$ for a new tranny?

It's not like whatever broke the bellhousing fixed itself, is it? You have a ticking time bomb there. The way things go with DSM's, it will probably break when you need it the most.

If you don't have much$ one option would be to get a used tranny from a salvage yard, then keep the old one for spare parts.

I think I saw front diffs going for about $250 at one of the tranny vendors somewhere. HTH.
