Splines

I'm changing my 95 AWD Automatic to a Manual. Its quite a process, I've learned that I need a transfer case and possibly some axles in addition to the rear end. This is where I get confused. What does this 21,22,23 spline stuff mean, how do I know which I need to get? Please help me, there is no mention of this in my repair manual or any of the FAQ's, if there is a webpage on this issue, please direct me to it.

I think you just count the notches in the diffs. where the axels go.
