Tranny toast

I have been having some problems with my tranny grinding recently but just tonight it really #@%#@%#@%#@%ed up. I was crusing around with a friend and got on the throttle a bit in 3rd gear. When I went to pull it out of third it wouldn't budge. I couldn't get it out of 3rd so I pulled over and stopped the car. I tried pulling it out of gear again and this time it came down from the 3rd gear position, but it was still locked into 3rd. I could move it from 3rd gear postion to 4th gear postion but thats it, no horizontal movment. The car ran and I had to drive it the rest of the way in 3rd. My question is, is there anything I can do to salvage this tranny or would I be better off just buying a used trans? Also, would I need just the trans or would there be anything else that might be damaged?

You may have just broken a shift fork. The whole tranny may not be dead.

Yeah it sounds like you have a broken shift fork. The trans should be rebuildable, Ive never seen one that wasnt unless you ran out of fluid.

If it is in fact the shift fork, could that have caused the grinding I was experiencing previously? Or would it probably be a combination of both now?

Probably both. If the shift fork was going you be grindng and therefore shifting harder into the gears and the extra pressure would brake the shift fork.
