Need help with Center Diff removal

I have read the vfaq on this but I am stuck at the point where I need to remove the 5th gear nut and the intermediate shaft nut. I can't seem to get the nuts completely unstaked. I thought that I had the 5th gear nut unstaked so I put a penny between the gears and turned the nut but the input shaft turned with it, I thought this can't hapen if I have the car in gear. Anways I'm pretty much a newbie in this area and would appreciate a more detailed explanation on how to remove the nuts and then the center diff. Thanks

go borrow an impact gun you will have them off in seconds.

I use a thin screwdriver to unstake the nuts. They will still be partially staked, but they will unscrew with some force. The penny trick works well, but the penny will get mangled in the gears. It takes about 1/8th of a turn before the penny locks the gears.
