I have been haveing a ratteling come from where my tranny meets the crank, it only happens mabe twice a week after a 35 min. drive but it goes away when i push in the clutch, so i am thinking it is a throwout bearing. Has anyone else heard this and what was the problem?
My question is if i am driving on the highway and my throwout bearing decides to go what other damage will happen.
When replacing the TOB should i go w/OEM or an aftermarket?

If its just a "tinktinktinktink" I wouldnt ever worry. Its just "broken in"

The OEM has a plastic sleave, which leads to the problem your having, ($20) the aftermarket all metal thats avali, cost an arm and a leg. $30.LOL

I wouldnt worry about it till you get a nice ACT in it. :)

I've heard terrible things about the metal sleeved bearings, I'd go with an OEM. As for dangers from a dead TOB, it all depends on how it dies. Of course, whatever the case, you want to inspect the flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch disk whenever you do the work anyhow, since it's all right there for ya.

My throwout bearing died a gruesome death a couple months ago, do a search on "Now THIS is a dead throwout bearing" - but the remnants coated the entire interior of the clutch housing, took some work to get it clean, but thankfully everything else turned out to be a-ok and relatively unscathed.

i did see your post, when i did my intial search, and that was one dead TOB.
Besides the plastic sleeve is there any other plastic pieces on the TOB, i ask because when i changed my tranny fluid i found a little white piece of plastic in the old fluid, it's about 1/4" long 1/4" high 1mm wide and has two little fins off of each side, almost like if you took a "X" and streched out the middle. I have no idea what this is, but i know it could not of be doing any good floating around in there.

Just thought I would add to this thread, apparently I didn't check but all the spec clutch kits come with the metal throwout bearing  very bad. I had to do some tranny work and upon inspecting it the metal sleeve on the tranny that the throwout bearing rides on was completely screwed up and the metal throwout bearing had grooves and scars all on the inside of it. NOT GOOD. I'll be ordering a new bearing and sleeve with all my other parts.

I had also posted regarding the "poping clutch" threads stating that this was probably the problem as mine was obviously hanging up on a scar on the sleeve but no one seems to think that could be the problem. I wonder how many shops put in a metel throwout bearing when doing stock or upgraded clutch jobs?
