Greetings, I am new to the site and have been searching posts for a while but I have one question that nobody seems to have the answer to. I have a 1992 Plymouth Laser RS FWD N/T that is currently automatic. I would like to do one of the following things and would like to know which is easier. let's go ahead and take cost out of the equation right now I don't care about that. I would like to either take the car to a manual transmission from the automatic that it is now, or get an autostick from a Sebring (the distant cousin to my car) and see if I can install that instead, to have the best of both worlds. If you folks could tell me if this is a mod, that even in theory, would work, I would greatly appreciate the information. I see them up at the u-wrench-it all the time, and since I am new to tuning, I'd like to get practice doing all kinds of things such as engine replacement, adding turbo-charging kits, and otherwise just playing around. THanks for your time

well, switching an auto transaxle with a manual tranny isnt as hard as everyone will say it is. Its just a matter of finding all the parts you need to do it. Here is a link to a page on VFAQ that has a step by step conversion for a 1G.

Go to this website and click on drivetrain at the top and scroll down until you get to A/T transmission. It will be listed under there.

As far as using the sebring, I have no.

If cost isnt a matter of concern they go buy a 92-93 AWD dsm w/5sp and blow you old on up or jump it off jumps. :p

The sebring has Zero relation to your car. You thinking of the 95+ 420a motor in the N/A dsms.

You will need a
FWD manual transaxle
ECU (maybe)
alot of time
clutch set up (slave,master,lines,pedal)

I personally think it would be easier to turbo your car halfass and get better gains. But thats just me.

See, I would just go buy another car, but that doesn't bring me any closer to knowledge. I am just in the game to learn and possibly make this more than a hobby. You bring me to another question however. Keep in mind I'm new folks, and this is a legitimate " I don't know" question. Is there any reason why a 95+ engine wouldn't fit under the hood? Is there any way to modify it so it will work? This is a truly interesting subject and I appreciate all info

2.0

I have a 1986 Plymouth Laser w/ turbo in the garage that I am considering putting in the 1992. Can anyone think of a good reason this wouldn't work? By all means, please stop me if I am about to embark on one big mistake. Thanks

I think the 1986 Lasers were Dodge/Plymouth Daytona's/ Chargers. No relation to the (1989) 1990-1994 model year Lasers. (Unless that was a typo, but there are no 1996 lasers)As far as the knowledge thing, you'll probably hear that you shouldn't have done this. If you must insist however, get a donor car, or go somewhere that will let you take everything off one; shifter, boot, shift cables and any mounting brackets. The transmission and I would think its axles. Clucth, Pressure plate, throwout bearing, and flywheel, and any corresponding bolts. I'm pretty sure an ECU. Some knowledge of vacuum lines or a detailed diagram of both kinds of cars. A final suggestion. If you want to do something like this, get a turbo DSM car and do that transfer at the same time. From N/A auto to Turbo 5 speed.
( I have no patience and I would not try something like this with a car I would need in the next 2-5 years ie. extended project)
I've never done this so look elswhere on the forum to find detailed info. A few people have done this swap, you could even turn that car into an AWD, but that is MUCK work and takes some dough.

oh yeah, like that guy said.

GOOD LUCK
regards

I was also looking at getting one as I have a PTS Billet Torque Converter from Level Ten. Anyone with experience of one of the Shiftronics?

Dan

SOURCE1064, when you get the car back can you give us some feed back on the Shiftronic. Have you also done the Performance Transmission System upgrade?

Dan

My whole trans is being rebuilt by Level Ten. I am also having them install the translab shift kit. The total for my transmission rebuild was $4090 so it better hold up. I pick it up from them on friday and hopefully my car can start being assembled.

SOURCE1064, a bit off the topic but I see that you have the Nitrous N-ter Cooler Chiller. How do you find it? Is it worth it? I live in the Philippines which is a bit hotter than NJ and am looking at purchasing the kit.

Dan

I haven't got to run it yet. My car has been down due to a robery and everything in my car is basically new now. I am waiting on the tranny so my car can be put back togeather. One it is I'll let you know.

Somebody on a different DSM forum was making reference to push button shifting on an automatic transmission. He explained, albeit vaguely that it was possible to do something like this in a 1g. Has this guy lost his mind, or is there really something to this?

Alright man, I'm gonna put myself out there. I'm a moron when it comes to this, and have no idea wtf I am looking at when I clicked your link. Shiftronic is nothing more than a word that would get me triple word score in scrabble, so if you have the opportunity, please explain what this does

It basically allows you to drive your car as an automatic or select shift via push button.

LEVEL 10 PERFORMANCE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM™
SHIFTTRONIC ™ MANUAL-AUTOMATIC FOR DOMESTIC CARS & TRUCKS

Do you want to shift your automatic like a manual? Need to control torque converter lockup and shift firmness? Level 10 Performance has created line device that makes it happen; the PTS™ Shifttronic Shifter, It's a plug-and-play module that mounts in the cockpit and links directly with your transmission computer harness to provide manual control of up and downshifts, shift pressure and converter lockup.

Level 10 Performance can allow you to shift your computer-controlled automatic domestic car or truck like a manual: it's the Level 10 PTS™ Shifttronic Manual-Automatic Shifter. Once plugged in, you have the option to go to any gear you please, upshifting and downshifting when you want. The Shifttronic Manual-Automatic is great for drag racers, rally drivers and anyone who wants positive trans control. The controller also offers you the option of changing how hard the trans shifts, and allows the driver to lock the torque converter on deceleration for real engine braking-like a manual shift transmission. Because hundreds of applications are available visit them at www.levelten.com for more information and to order your Shifttronic kit.

I see that I did not research as thoroughly as necessary. I thank you for your time. i want to see if I can find some stats on this, and pictures of it installed. Thanks again

Here is a pic of the shifttronic. I picked it up today. I wasn't too pleased when I found out how much it actually costed but that's business for you.
