Hi, I have a stock 90 GSX and i've been trying to figure this problem out for a while now. Everytime i try to get into first gear it grinds, I have the clutch pedal all the way to the floor but it still grinds. what i've discovered is that if i shift from neutral to second then to first it doesnt grind. Also when i'm down shifting its so hard to get it into gear, you have to force it into gear so hard. My friend told me that maybe its just the way eclipses are but i dont think its suppose to be a hassle just to get into first or to downshift. Thanks for the time!:dsm:

In most cars you have to come to virtually a complete stop before you try to put it in first. If it is difficult engaging first at a standstill. it could be clutch release related problem, ie one not totally disengaging, or some thing wrong internally with the transmission. Make sure that your clutch is totally disengaging, and change the fluid in the transmission. Changing fliuds have helped some people wiht rough transmission issues like that.
hope that helps a little.
regards

If you can shift to 2nd and then first without grinding while stopped then its your 1st gear synchro. The synchro is what helps match the speed of the input shaft to the speed of the gear during shift. So if you are setting still, motor running, depress clutch and try to shift to first, your input shaft and clutch disk(they turn as one) have to stop turning before the shift ring can engage. Now if your synchro had enough friction to stop the input shaft it would engage properly thats why it shifts right once its stopped by using the 2nd gear synchro to stop the rotation of the input shaft.hope that explains things for you.By the way,if it was your clutch not disengaging it would make lots of noise going into reverse.

Can you go into reverse without a clang? Not just stab the clutch and jam it, but put in the clutch and give it a five count, and see if you can pull it into (or against, if the gears have lined up just to where they'll block each other). If it grinds after giving it the chance to stop spinning, adjust your clutch. If you're not getting grind on reverse, you're trying to get into first when and/or as you shouldn't. Don't ever bother with first if the car's moving. Always ease into first, from a stop, and if you have to grab it in a hurry, give 4th a short jab so its synchros will stop the gears in the transmission, then go into first.
