Is it the clutch?

Hi, I am pretty new to the list and haven't posted anything but have gained a lot of invaluable knowledge about my eclipse. I own a 97 GST w/ light mods (Blitz BOV, Magnecor Wires, K&N FIPK). Coming home today I got on the on ramp to the highway and went to shift into third gear. When I released the clutch and stepped on the gas, I got nothing but RPM buildup. I heard no sound, saw no smoke, no smell, nothing. I still press in the clutch to start the engine (the engine still runs fine). The odd thing is, the shifter is stuck in 3rd gear. I tried rocking the car and everything to get it out of gear but had no luck. Is it the clutch that went out, or something else? Any help would be appreciated.

TIA,
Jeff

Um, if the shifter is stuck in 3rd, then so is the transmission. That doesn't sound like a clutch if its stuck in 3rd. The reving part sounds like the clutch but more then likely when you went into 3rd the transmission syncros were screwed and it just reved without being fully engaged. Your clutch sounds fine, but we need more information. How did it get stuck in 3rd? Was it at the same time that you thought your clutch was messed up when the engine free reved? Was there any drag on the engine (signs of transmission and everything getting power to the ground)?

Anybody else have ideas?
