xfer case spline equals gear ratio ???

does spline reflect its gear ratio also ?
or are they 2 different things?

this is so confusing.
check what I found using the infamous search button.
"92~99year 23spline transfercase are interchangable"
"98+year models changed all their gear ratios"
"97+year models had their gear ratios changed"
"you can use same spline transfercase for 1g's and
23spline x-case for 2g's, but same spline 1g/2g x-case isnt compatible "
"1g and 2g xfer's bolt patterns are probably different"

No ,that is the spline count. Nothing more.

Yes, Yes, and Yes. The gear ratios of the tranny, X-fer case and rear end did not change from 1G to 2G as long as you're talking Manual AWD. The early '90s X-fer case had the 22 spline shaft which will not interchange but the gear ratios did not change.

It's a search button, not "the magic right answer button". Search the CLUBDSM site the VFAQs and the Shop Manuals and you'll find the answer.

You are going way deeper into it than you need to and getting all confused. The 1G and 2G M/T AWD trannies, X-fer cases and rear end final drive gear ratios never changed. You can bolt a 2G tranny to a 1G, and vice versa, a 1G X-fer (non-22 spline) to a 2G, and vice versa. If the primary or secondary ratios did change it was compensated for by the time it got to the final drive.

I am not sure where you saw the ratios listed on the VFAQ but think about it. If you can swap trannies from 1G to 2G and the rear end ratios are the same the X-fer case has to be the same, too. You can't mix and match.

Hey, I never saw that VFAQ before. He does have question marks after the 2G X-fer ratios as if he was unsure. Like I said they can't be different. Not by any amount that would matter. In my 6 or 7 years of DSMing I've never heard of it being an issue. The only concern has always been the proper spline count.

Not sure if I've eased your mind at all but I think you are seeing more of an issue than there really is.
