This is a little update to the problems I've been writing about for a while. See this thread and this thread for the earlier details.

Anyhow - I finally got to drop the tranny. Ended up having to cut the speedometer cable. Once it was finally out, the speedometer cable would come out only if I unbolted the part that holds the entire speedometer gear assembly in - and it came out whole. Still trying to figure out how to get that out.

But - the main problem was definitely the throwout bearing. It looks like it got KILLED somehow, I'm not sure what I did to kill it this bad.

Enclosed are some pics... y'all ought to love this - the left hand side here shows my throwout bearing, the right hand side is a new one.

The rear. It actually split in two - the actual back end is shown on the top, the remainding assembly on the bottom, next to a new one.

Notice that it actually ripped chunks of the bearing off - at the top, you can see that.

Now, granted this throwout bearing is dead... but thankfully I think my clutch is ok. I'd like a second opinion though - looking at my clutch disc, it looks fine (even if it does smell terrible), and the pressure plate looks ok too, even if scratched up a bit (no doubt by flying debris from the throwout bearing..)

I had to spend a bit of time cleaning up the mess that bearing left inside there.

Here's the clutch disc, front & bank

And here's the pressure plate:

Do think I'll need to replace the clutch or pressure plate? I just wanna be sure.

no, the chattering happened when the clutch WAS pressed in.

The whole thing happened pretty suddenly, as I stopped at a light the clutch went to the floor, then this..

does it shift ok? or does it grind at all?

if you need some help with this, message me or somethin.

My problem was that it didn't shift at all, the car wouldn't move. So I had to fix it.

Doesn't anyone else hang out in this forum? I figured I'd get a dozen responses about the shape of that bearing by now.

The exact same thing happened to me, except my throw out bearing ate up the sleeve, the clutch seperated into about 7pc counting the springs, and the pressure plate had some bad hot spots as wellas some light hairline cracks. Mine went out while I was going down the road.

Your pressure plate looks like it has some pretty nasty heat-spots. I'd just change everything while it's all apart. Get the flywheel resurfaced too.

Well, a little Purple Power cleaner cleaned up the pressure plate pretty good, and I put everything back on yesterday, and finished the job today. She runs great now.... I didn't really have $400-500 to do a new clutch & flywheel resurfacing anyway. But now that I've done the work, next time it'll be easier.

That clutch is only about 4,000 miles old anyhow. I hope it lasts.

It looks like you had constant pressure on your clutch due to the clutch not bign adjusted correctly. My reasoning is the heat spots on the pressure plate and your throw out bearing going to shit, because it was constantly spinning with the engine and the heat. But thats just what it looks like from here. If you want to check for this problem crawl under your car and see if you can spin you slave cylider rod easily with your fingers if you cant you have to much pressure on your clutch fork. Good luck.

i wonder did he use the clutch pilot tool guide when installing the clutch?

When I put the clutch back in, I did use the alignment tool to install the clutch. It seems to drive fine now....

My only problem now is that I had to cut my speedometer cable to drop the tranny, so I'm waiting for that to come in.

Why id you cut the cable? Anyhow, as long as all the fingers on the PP werent all uneven it will be fine. i had that happen to me a few years ago...no biggy =)

Cuz the cable wouldn't come out of the transmission when I was trying to drop the tranny, and I couldn't get it out otherwise. It was rusted in there, apparently. See one of the previous threads referenced above...
