i have a 99 n/t with an auto tranny. I took the drain pan off of the tranny as well as the filter. After letting it all drain i know for a fact that there is no way 9 qts of tranny fluid came out, but the dsm book said that auto's have 9.1 capacity. So what am i missing here? I put 4 quarts because thats about all that came out and then put a new filter on and put it all back together. I started the car and put my foot on the break and went through all the gears and when it shifted it made a weird clicking type noise. Anyways can someone please help me

the entire capacity of the tranny system is 9 quarts but a lot of that is in the torque converter and it does'nt drain out so you did everything correct, the clicking is normal I'm suprised you have'nt noticed it before.

no, i know the clicking that your talking about which is normal. But what im talking about never happened until i just changed the fluid and filter. Kind of sounds like a creeky door slowly being opened. It does it right when you put it in gear and lasts for about 2secs then stops. I told my fiance to drive it and ill see her tommorow to find out if it stopped or not

It's the transmission solenoid pack located right next to the base of the dipstick tube for the trans. It's the valves opening and closing to control fluid flow to the appropriate areas of the transmission to engage gears. As for the fluid level, when you dropped the pan you didn't (couldn't) drain the torque convertor, oil cooler (inside the radiator), and all of the transmission.

The first few designs of the transmission solenoid pack came with a black cover over it which reduced the noise level a little. It consisted of the solenoid pack cover, the solenoid pack, a gasket, a plate, and another gasket then the transmission. After a while they redesigned it again and the replacement packs do not use the cover, one gasket and the metal plate. The solenoid pack replacement is a little quiter than it's original designs. Given the cost of the pack however, it would be better off to keep using the original pack until it fails. Try adding power mods like cold air intake and exhaust to help "get rid of" the noise:D

Go get the fluid professionally flushed out by a local shop. It costs about 90 bucks, and takes like 30 mins. Draining the pan doesn't even make any difference because you are only replacing about 10% of the fluid. The flush replaces 100%.
