I have a couple questons for all of those with tranny rebuild experience. I have an early 90 AWD tranny that I opened up and put a new 1st-2nd hub slider, synchros, and 2nd gear. I put it back together and turned up my boost and made some passes at the track. Durning a 2nd to 3rd gear shift I was to quick with the clutch and clipped or clanked into 3rd. To make a long story short I broke a tooth on the intermediate shaft on the teeth that mesh with 3rd. Being that I have an early 90 trans those teeth are wider and should be stornger than later models in 3rd gear. So why did this break? Did I not shim it correctly, and if so why didn't the actual 3rd gear blow chunks intead of the shaft. Or is this just what happens when you clip into a gear?

Thanks,

A gear is HARD to break,it should be one of teh strongest thing in your tranny, In fact I broke EVERYTHING in my tranny (My talon was the first car I drove stick on, ever) and All my gears were good, even on stock Tranny oil!!!! I did wear down my reverse gear and all my teeth were rounded instead of pointy, but that was due to me never changing my gear oil, other then that my gears were in tip top shape.

if you didnt shim it properly the shafts do not mesh properly and it is easier to break the gears (in my experience). did you shim everything correctly. Keep in mind third gear also meshes with the center diff. so if you didnt shim the center diff case your problem may have been there.

umiami80,
you got any of those good tranny gears laying around still. Send me your old parts! Haha!

raped,
I was thinking maybe the diff could have done it. I thought it was a little sloppy but it was within spec. I'm gonna use a thicker washer so it doesnt have as much play next time.

Yea the center diff requires preload. There really shouldnt be any play in it.

So how do you prelaod it? What tools do I need? I only checked the spacing for the passenger side of the diff. Are you saying that I might need to place a spacer on the drivers side?!?

The spacer goes on the passenger side only. The manual calls for .003 in to .005 in of preload. So take the amount of endplay it would have with out a spacer and add .003 in to .005 in to get the spacer thicknes that you need. :thumb:
