No 1st or 2nd in car, but they're there in the tranny.

Ok, so I was swapping out a motor, 96 to a 98 motor, figured I'd replace the clutch as well with an OEM clutch.
Got everything dropped back in the car, hooked up linkage, and I double checked the gears by running through them, however it only goes into 3, 4, 5, and R while doing it in the car.

If you go in the bay, and disconnect the up & down linkage, the tranny will shift into those gears. The position the stick is in the car is also off.
It's too far up to the front of the car.

When I have a bud hold the shifter in neutral inbetween 3rd, and 4th, I put the shifter on the tranny at the same place, but the linkage is way far off. Like its too long.

Is it possible cause its not hooked up at the slave yet?
The tranny has had 0 issues ever. Didn't mess with the linkage at all. Took the 2 12mm mount bolts off the tranny to disconnect it.

Any input would be sweet. Thanks.

*Update*

I got all gears available inside the car, but somethings still not right.

1st and 2nd are where 3rd and 4th should be. 3rd and 4th are a little to the right. A very little.
5th and reverse are in their correct places.

When you try to put it in where 1st normally is, its a brick wall. All the way to the left and up is still first, but its all too far to the right.

Ok so there is no adjustment my bad. but is it possible that you twisted the cables around when installing that would cause the problem also if they where not mounted solid.

LOL. I didnt think there was a way to adjust these ones.
The line is about an inch too long. Thats the issue.

When I pulled the stuff apart, I unbolted it by the mounting brackets. Theyre not twisted. Best I can do is take apart the center console to try n see if maybe something messed up in there. But otherwise, everyone I talked to, has no clue what it could be.

I had a similar issue on my 1g, broke a shift cable and replaced then with a set from the salvage yard. Got them in and readjusted (obviously doesn't apply to a 2g) and had problems with first and second and sometimes third. I messed with it for hours, made a solid shifter base, rechecked everything over and over. Then after letting it sit for a few days it dawned on me that I still had syncromesh in my tranny and it had recently started to warm up, went from like 30 degrees to around 70 in a day, so drained the old fluid and put some 75w-90 gear oil in it and fixed my problem. I know that 2g tranny's use a different kind of tranny fluid, but I figured this may help you out some...

Well, theres really only 1 spot it could go in. And nearly impossible to mess up. Ill post some pics up tomorrow. It'll help people understand what im getting at.

Took out the center console, it appears that a spring is stopping it from moving where it needs to go.

But what I dont get, is with the linkage off, itll move where 1st should be, no problem. Then re-connect it, and then theres a problem.

New fluid solved your issue? I dont see how that would make up for the slack. I think youre misunderstanding what my issue is. LOL

Whoops. :D LOL

I missed that part in your first post. :ohdamn:

I did have slack in the shifter as well, which is why I made a solid shifter base and the bracket that is bolted to the transmission that the cables are locked into (behind the shift levers) was sitting to low, had to loosen it up and move it up. It did help remove some slack.
