front axle/intermediate shaft

Well my inner CV boot(on the driver's side) broke and I don't know how long it has been like that so I am going to put in a new front axle. My question is about the axle and intermediate shaft. Do I have to take out the the intermediate shaft of the tranny when replacing the axle??? If so, after I take the entire assembly(Axle/Intermediate shaft) out of the tranny, how do I take the two apart??? And is it difficult to disconnect the axle from the Intermediate shaft???

When you buy it new it comes as one long shaft already assembled so you don't have to do anything to it.
