Question

Funky Noise (Vibrating/knocking) NOT lifters/valves/exhaust (tensioner?) MOVIES


Hey folks, so i've had this knocking/vibrating problem since I got the car about a year ago. Under about 2500rpm it is really bad, but above that it instantly evaporates. I just put in a set of 3g revised lifters and they're great, but it didn't solve the problem. The sound is more "volkswagen diesel" sounding. Here are a couple links to videos so you can take a look and listen. The only other thing i can think about, as you will see in the video is the cam belt tensioner. Please leave input or ideas because I am kinda stuck and don't want to spend time and money needlessly.

Did you set the tensioner right? is it loose? It really looks like the belt is just to loose.

unds to melik a loose timing belt tensioner, i had mine loose up only a few weeks after i re-timed the engine here recently and had to gback in and do i all over again... The key to it is when it gets quiet when you ev it,that's the engine speedig upand pulling the slack out of the belt..then when load levels off or he engne is slowing the rattle is plain as day., working on motrcycle with bad timing chain tensioners helpede figure that one out fast when i dealtwith it.. I bet your timing belt will be rather loose if yoiu go to check it buy hand whe the engine is at rest..the oONLY place the t-belt should have much if any slack is on the side going downward fromthe exhaust cm gear,, check in the middle of the cam gears nd if it's looseat alll really you know what ou need to do

Thats exactly what I'm thinking, and its probably not safe to be running the engine while the belt is loose, Even if the tensioner is not loose, the belt is because you can see the flapping it is doing, just doesnt seem safe for the valves. Lol

OP- Was this your first timing belt job? If so I would say retry setting the tensioner.

Thanks for the input guys. I have a record of the dealer doing the timing belt at 60k miles and it's at about 75k miles now, so no, *I* didn't do the timing belt. I guess I'll get down to business and figure out how to set that tensioner, then. (I haven't done it before). But thanks for the input guys. Feel free to throw some more wisdom around, much appreciated.

Hm if the dealer did it at 60k and your only at 75k then the belt should be good. I would just read this and check the position of the tensioner.

Consider doing a really good visual inspection of the belt, it may only be 15k old but with that kind of vibration, friction and heat the belt could have already been compromised.
