Breaking in a tranny

How should you break in a tranny, shifting, fluid etc?

i am getting a brand new fwd tranny with quafi diff in it

Just take it easy on the car and shift nicely for about 500 miles. Don't beat the shit outta the car. For the first 500 miles, just use 80/90 oil. Then change it after 500 miles and put in Redline, BG synchroshift, or GM Synchromesh. DON'T use any oil with friction modifiers.

Friction modifiers? Is it safe to use GM syncromesh right off the bat? What exactly is bad about not breaking in a tranny? i.e. what wears or can fail prematurely?

oh, one more question i forgot to ask, what does breaking in a tranny consist of? easy shifting, no WOT?, no unnecessary downshifts etc?

Yes it's safe to use GM Synchromesh right away. But, there's really no point using it considering you need to change it after the first 500 miles. I'm not sure what the cost of it is, but I'm sure it's around $8/qt. Just use something cheap like valvoline 80-90, then after the 500 miles, put the GM Synchromesh in. As for breaking it in, do just what you asked, "Easy shifting, no WOT, no unnecessary downshifts etc". Just take it easy.

Um. I work at a GM dealership. Syncromesh is a semi-synthetic. We have a full synthetic, called Synthetic gear lubricant. I can't remember the weight off the top of my head, but are you sure Syncromesh, not full synthetic.
