Why doesn't a 2G LSD fit a 1G? And which one to choose?

Hey guys,
I'm running a 1G GST tranny and need an LSD.
But most LSDs are just for AWD or 2G GST?
Why exactly?

Never had a 2G, so I have no clue.
Also: what kind of LSD would you recommend?
Car is driving daily doing the summer.

Evo3 16G Turbo (370+ hp) and often reaches speeds over 120mph in daily traffic.
It also runs a few times on the track (no preped track).

I guess a phantomstyle diff is out of the question, or would that be able to handle this load without blowing apart?

Hope you guys can help me.

If you want a quality differential than you have a few options. Qualife and kaaz are probably the best ones on the market. They are pricey though, about 800 bucks for a new one.

Why does (according to ebay) a qualife fit a 91-99 Eclipse when a OBX only fits 96-99?

My from Germany so if I order a LSD that doesn't fit it would travel around the world twice ;)

Stay away from the obx crap on ebay. This is not a part you want to use. Qualife is in the Uk so it isn't too far from you at all. Call qualife and tell them what you have and they will get you the right one. A 2g diff will fit right in a 1g case by the way.

Ok, I'll stay away from OBX, but is there a reason that an OBX LSD will not fit a 1G tranny and a Qualife will?

I'll ask them in the UK, but I think it will be the same as asking mahle (in germany) for pistons. Its cheaper to buy exported pistons in the US and ship them back to Germany than actually buy them here.

All you need to know now is the build-year of your tranny.

Oh, I wish I didn't have to say this, but do not get anything from OBX or put a Phantom whatever in your car. Quaife, Kaaz, Cusco, or stay stock.

That is a damn good question, can the serial number tell me that sort of thing?
I brought it used, two years ago, I have no idea what year it is, it was installed in a CA0 Mirage before I bought it and the owner said it is a stock 1G GST tranny.

In '93 (not 92) Mitsu went with bigger axles. That required a different front diff. Aftermarket went after what was more
common (93-99).

To use one of those front diffs, you would have to upgrade to the larger, 93/94 axles. Which isn't all expensive and you do end-up with a stronger axle.

I accationally see people selling completete transmissions with the LSD diff for less money that you pay for the diff alone! That is because FWD DSMs are not as popular around here. If you find a 2G tranny, you should be able to use it with 93/94 axles and a matching starter plate.

I have always heard that the axle change took place in late '92 (which was probably the '93 model year).

If you have the earlier FWD trans with the smaller axles (which have the same spline count as the AWD), then you would need Quaife part number QDH8B.

I know some changes took place in April of '92, which would have been a few months before the traditional mid-late summer model change.

I wonder if there is a list somewhere of the exact dates of all the major factory changes? I've never seen a comprehensive one.

The transmission VIN number is located about 3 oclock offset from the engine blocks vin if your looking from the passenger side.

That said, the engine blocks vin is passenger side of block where the small water pipe runs near the head. It's very faint but it's there.
How to tell engine year for timing kit ordering? - DSM Forums: Mitsubishi Eclipse, Plymouth Laser, and Eagle Talon Forum: DSMtalk.com

On the transmission there is a stamped number right below that, that is NOT what your looking for. Keep going down towards the 3 oclock position (towards the gearshift linkage)

On mine it's very hard to see since it looks like it was engraved by hand and not a machine.

Decoder: Or use Mitsubishi ASA/CAPS to decode.

Feel free to correct or add info there

BTW I love this part:
and often reaches speeds over 120mph in daily traffic

Must be runnin' late for a bathroom break eh? ROFL

If indeed the change occurred before the 1993 model year, the transmission code is probably more accurate in this case than the VIN since the large axles were used only with the last of the three (SPQV) 1G FWD turbo transmissions. I originally listed the model years here but with the correct transmission code, that shouldn't matter.
