sheared my rear cv off in my diff

I'll make this short and sweet as I can. Driving on the interstate to work this morning around 75 or 80 my car started make this obnoxious clunking from the rear end. Pulled over to check it out and it looked like my driver cv had backed out. Limped her home about a mile or two. Got under it to get a better look and it sheared my cv axle off inside my rear diff. I know your wondering why don't you just pull it out right? Well it just happen to break off where the splines start. I have nothing to grab, pry or pull. My question is how the Eff do I get the broken piece out my diff. I thought about pulling the opposite cv off and getting a punch or slide hammer to knock the broken piece out. Not sure how well that would work though. Has anyone else ever had this happen and if so how did you fix it. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

You are correct. Pull the other axle, and knock it out. You should also remove the diff cover, and rinse out the diff with brake cleaner.

Pulling the opposite axle and knocking it out has worked on more than one occasion for me. But one time I had to drill a hole in the center of the axle and put a self tapping screw in it. Then I used a dent puller to get it out.

Same here I wanna see this. As far as getting it out I think the easiest way is to take out the passenger side cv axle like what you said

Worst case you just drill and tap it out but this seems like something you should hang on your parts wall of shame.

What do you mean by drill and tap it out? Could you explain a little more? If its easier than pulling the other cv out I'm willing to try it. Thanks for all the help guys

When the axle snaps it leaves the splined part in the differential. So you drill a hole in it, and tap it for a bolt. Screw the bolt in and use it to pull out the stub that's left in the diff.

Well I didn't get to tear into it today but I did go ahead and get the replacement cv. I'll post those pics and let you know what worked best to remove the broken cv after I get off work tomorrow.

Well I pulled the cv axle out and this is what I found. 3/4 of the splines were missing from the cv. I popped the other cv axle off and used a punch to get the broke price out. Surprised how easily it came out. I tried to post some pics but it won't let me upload from my phone. Had some damage to the driver side bearing where it looked like the cv rounded it out. Splines inside the housing looked good, still flat and square. The cv knuckle had a smooth rounded edge almost the entire length of the break. Almost as if it had either been rubbing against something or its been broken for awhile??? I'm lost really lol I'm still trying to figure out what caused it though. I should mention I just bought the car last week with a bad clutch and t-case. I already replaced the t-case and was getting ready for the clutch when this happened.

Id check gear ratios. Sounds like the front tires are not going the same speed as the rear. Week point was probably the axle. Or it could have been broken off for awhile and it was barely hanging on. My trucks secondary shaft did that. It was still attached but I broke it in half with my hand. It was weird

So I have a question. My clutch has been feeling like its going out since I replaced the t-case. Being that I have a B17 3 bolt LSD IF the has been broke could it make it feel like the clutch is going out due to it not being able to put the power to the rear?

Anyone???

It feels like its slipping but my clutch engages and disengages fine. Goes in and out gear fine, just feels like it won't grab all the way

That's pretty damn close to what mine looked like. I'm getting new carrier bearings pressed on my diff today. I'm having quite a bit of trouble finding a replacement cv axle. I called the dealership just for shits and giggles said there was only one left in th U.S. lol and they wanted $693.11 for it. I laughed and Hung up the phone. Called dsm graveyard they are out of stock also. I'm running out of options as far as where to get one. Anyone have opinions where to pick one up?

I have read so many bad things about DSM Graveyard, that even if they had them I wouldn't get them through them. I am also interested in were others get there axles. There is always the autozone lifetime warranty ones, but those don't seem to last very long...

The graveyard axles are autozone/etc axles just being sold for a giant profit.

Damn I didn't know dsmgraveyard was such a hoax. I can assure you ill never call them again. I found a guy on Craigslist that had a few extras laying around. I picked up 2 for $50 which is a steal. As far as advanced, napa, oriellys or autozone goes they said the axles were unavailable to them. So if I had to buy new I wouldn't even know where to start

Update* so I replaced the broken cv axle and I kept having problems with it backing out on me after 5 or 10 mins of driving. I pulled it back off a few times to see if the keeper on the cv was messed up and all was well. I thought I had fixed it so I drove to the store a few miles down the road. Went to merge into traffic and there was a firm pop from the rear and it started acting like it was slipping again I got tired of messing with it so I bought a 4 bolt rear end with everything to swap into mine. I'm really hoping this will fix my problems. I'll keep you updated as I get it in
