sound coming from rear end

I noticed the other day a noise coming from the rear end of my car. Its like a womping sound. It only makes the sound when i cruise at one speed or let off the gas and decellerate. I saw somthing in the VFAQ about a thumping sound when you accellerate but when i hit the gas and get anything about 10 vac or like 1/4 throttle the car stops making the sound. Have any of you had this problem before?

i just finished going though all the old posts to see if i can find somthing about this but i couldn't find anything that sounds like my problem. My car is not leaking any rear end fluid or tranny fluid. I have a new transfer case. I just replaced my clutch with a new ACT2600. The car made the same sound before the clutch went in. I am totaly stuck as to what it can be.

got the same problem just replaced my rear diff.and that wasnt it starting to think its one of the carrier bearings in the driveshaft making this noise im going to shoot some thick grease in the 2 holes of the carrier to see if that helps if it does then i know that the bearing is bad.someone suggested filling it up with silicone to me but i dont think that is to good,it only makes the noise on decelarion and cruising in gear kindas like a growly grating noise.yours sound the same?

I think my car makes that too. It's not really a "womping" as much as a whining. When you first let off the gas it will go "wahh wahh wahhhhhh". If you put it in neutral it goes away completely. I don't know what it is, I thought it was my transfer case at first but it wasn't. I don't think its anything to worry about because I've heard several others say they have the same thing.

I had some friends in the car with me to lisent to the noise and they said its more like a vibration noise. It only does it when i cuise or decell. Its not the xfer case i have a new one on thanks to the dealer but that noise is super anyoing.

When I got that noise I went to change the fluid in the rear end and when I pulled the drain plug huge chunks of the gears fell out, that could be one possibility.

I have the same noise. I've read lots of articals on this and am starting to beleive this noise that we hear is normal. Even RWD car can have this noise.

Some rears will have gear noise as a normal sound especially if you go with aftermarket gears, mainly this is due to the pitch of the teeth on the gears, but most factory gears are designed to be quite, so do reduce the amount of noise in the car.It may be a sign of something else, change the fluid and look for anything unusual in the fluid, if possible pull the back cover off and look at the gears and look at the driveshaft and axles.

Well at least one good thing came out of my car now being FWD, that noise i was hearing is now gone

eclipsedriver: Did you figure out what was the cause of the noise ? I have the same noise when decelerating. Pretty annoying.

I found out that the noise from my car was due to my welded center diff.
