by looking at the tranny from a 90 and a 92 tsi awd how can i tell the difference? thanks

other than the 22 splines or 23 splines how can i tell the difference by looking at them?

1990 AWD trannies *usually* have 22 spline output shafts, but once in a while you'll come across a 23 spline 90. 1991 cars can have either, it just depends on the production date. 1992 and newer cars have 23 splines from the factory. There never was a 20 or 21 spline output shaft, ever.

Best way to tell if a trans is a 90 is that the horizontal shift lever is much shorter than the 1991+ models, by about an inch overall.

thanks that is the answer i was looking for. i have a 92 awd i blew the tranny. (put a hole in it.) so i bought one that came out of a 91 awd. so i look at it count the splines 23 and say o.k it will work. send it to bm to have them build it. a couple of days later they call back and tell me it's a late 90 tranny. with a 23 spline output shaft. so now i need the cables and shifter from a 90 to make it work right?

can i just take the horizontal lever off the 92 tranny and bolt it to the 90 tranny? will this work?

I have a question, I may sound like goon for asking this though. I'm a newbie and I just bought a 92' Talon TSi AWD recently and it has a cracked transmission.(the shell is cracked).I need some suggestions. The car runs and everything but when I push in the clutch. It sticks to the floor and it pop backs up a second or 2 later. Is it because my tranny is cracked? or is something wrong with the clutch and I need a new one. Also, I was told I could weld the shell back together and everything should be fine. Is this a good idea? Otherwise, I'm just going to have to buy a new/used tranny. Help please?

You can have the bellhousing welded back together, but it will most likely require the removal of the transmission. I've had this done successfully, though.

Whats wrong with my clutch? Is it cause the tranny is broken? Also, I can shift into all my gears without pushing the clutch in and its almost to bascially it is impossible to move into reverse?is this all the trannys fault?or should it do this?

With the transmission casing cracked, most likely the part that is cracked is the part where the clutch slave cylinder is located. If that cylinder isn't locked into place in relation to the clutch, it won't disengage the clutch enough to let you shift the car.
