I'm following the procedures from vfaq for installing a clutch, however is it really neccesary to take the exhaust off? I have a custom exhaust and frankly I can't get it off - anyone do this without taking it off?

thanks

Uh, yes. Of course you have to take the exhaust off. Without at least the downpipe off, you can't drop the transfer case, and can't drop the transmission.

You don't have to remove the whole exhaust. You can get by with just unbolting the dp from the turbo, unbolt the first hanger, and the groundstrap. Then it can flex out of the way.

Uh-NO you dont have to take the exhaust off to get at the clutch. I just did a tranny swap on my 90 GSX and I left my down pipe on and had no problems working around it. Just becareful and slip everthing down. You will have to work your hand up in there to get at some bolts on the transfer case but you will be able to do it. Have fun, it took me a while.

Well guys its been awhile since ive been on but i didnt have to take the downpipe off - the bolts holding the dp to the turbo were stripped out and rusted and i just couldnt get them off theyll have to be cut off - it really wasnt even that much of a hassle - but thanks for the help
